Free NYS Citizen Preparedness Training Program offered at The BEST Center, registration required

By Billie Owens

A NYS Citizen Preparedness Training Program will be offered on Monday, June 30, at The BEST Center. Time is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Batavia City Council President Brooks Hawley invites citizens to attend this free program that provides the tools and resources to prepare for emergencies and disasters, to respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions.

Each family that attends will receive a NYS Disaster preparedness Kit that contains items to assist people in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. The state training and kits will help New Yorkers be the most-trained and best-prepared citizens in the country.

The BEST Center is located at One College Road, Room T102, at Genesee Community College.

Mark was right - the classes are ALWAYS federally funded.

This is one of the few current immigration policies I happen to agree with. If someone enters this country legally, meets ALL of the requirements, studies, works, and is self supporting (unfortunately this is not a requirement) he or she deserves the HONOR (Mr. Spaulding) of being a citizen.

I would change the "path to citizenship" in the following ways:
Self supporting through gainful employment
Proficiency in English
High school equivalent (GED)
A track record of working to assimilate to US societal norms.
No dual citizenship. You're either an American or you're not.

What do you want to bet that if the democrats keep the senate in the midterms, illegal aliens will be eligible to take these "free" classes and get the 5 year residency requirement waived before 2016? The dems want those votes ASAP.

Of all the useless things government spends money on, this isn't one to quibble about. Natural and man-made disasters are not going anywhere and we are getting better and better at responding to and recovering from them. Preparedness is key to recovery not only for individuals but communities as well. I see nothing but a win/win here. A refreshing good use of my tax dollars.
