Capacity turnout for community meeting on sex offenders

By Howard B. Owens

Good turn out tonight for the community meeting on sex offenders called for by Councilwoman Rose Mary Christian and organized by Police Chief Randy Baker and members of his department.

Top photo is Det. Pat Corona explaining some of the information available to the community on sex offenders.

After his opening remarks, Det. Corona showed a video about the New York sex offender database.

And it was at that point that I had to leave rather abruptly to cover the accident at Jackson and Ellicott.

I was unable to attend. Would someone who did go kindly sum up what went on please? I am very curious. Somebody in my community is currently jailed and will be a registered offender. This person lived about 50 feet from a park. I had contacted the police department and asked if this person will be allowed to live this close to a park when released and I was told it was up to the ruling judge to put it in his ruling. I was shocked that Genesee County does not have a law that registered offenders can not reside by schools, parks or day cares. There are a lot of communities that do.
