Site Upgrade -- Social Networking

"Social Networking" is a wonky term for the ability of people on a web site to connect with each other by, among other things, tagging each other as "friends."
We now have this "friends" feature on The Batavian.
Now you can go to a person's profile page and see all of their blog posts and comments, sign their individual guestbook and, if you want, invite that person to be your friend.
You can then go to your own profile page and look at your friend's activity.
This is a brand new feature on the site, so your feed back is welcome.
Over the next few days, I'll invite all registered users to be my friend -- this will make me, I suppose, a bit like Tom on MySpace, but we want to be sure everybody gets introduced to this new feature.

We should ad a field to allow you to link to your personal (or business) web site. I'll look into it.

anyone know what the rock house up at the old Vine Street park was for? The school is beside it now?

Howard, I received your "friend" invite via email. The email included a link in the body that you are to click to confirm the invite. I did just that, but it took me to a "The Batavian" page which said that I was unauthorized to access the page. I then decided to log into my "The Batavian" account and I went to the "My Friends" page and manually accepted your invite.
Just as a suggestion, you may want to look into this possible glitch. Thank you!

Bill, if I'm not mistaken, there was an ice skating rink behind that 'rock' house. It might have been a shelter for the skaters.
Also, I believe they used that house to store playground equipment in the summer.
I vaguely remember the ice skating rink.
Perhaps your question will jog someone's memory.

Posted by Howard Owens on October 11, 2008 - 6:59am
You find the person you want to invite on the People page. Click their profile, link and then click the "invite friend" link.
Right now we don't have a way to invite people who have not already joined The Batavian, but we should.

Didnt want to show off my age, but the rink was more over toward where the school is now. Yes we warmed up in it as they always had a fire in there. But we also went into the woods and built a fire too and sang songs.
But the building goes way before that. I moved to Rochester in November 50 and finished high school. Then moved to Texas in 63, but did come back some times.
but thanks for the come back

Howard, thanks for the "friend" invite. Also can't thank you enough for providing The Batavian. I miss home so much, always wished The Daily News was online and could only keep up thanks to News and Obits via WBTA Radio online. I will put your site under my daily "must-see" and will contribute from time to time.
Enjoy the fall colors and drink some cider for me!

Thanks, Lisa.
I imagine you can thank The Batavian for this -- the Daily will be online in a few weeks. We're all excited about that.

Your memories of the stone building are far more "first hand" than mine. I graduated from BHS in 1960 and only knew of the ice rink and stone building from stories my mother told.
My children all went to John Kennedy school. Much of the woods you remember as a schoolboy were gone by then.

Can somebody go out and get a picture of the stone building and post it here?
