The Sheriff's Sergeant who produced the press release was nice enough to reply to my text message at 10:15 p.m. on his night off -- the "10-year-old" has been corrected -- he's 20, and his name has been reinserted into the post. He also clarified that any time an age shows up on the release that it's under 16, then it's a mistake. Under 16 would be handled differently. At the same time, an angry mother called me and complained that her daughter was included though she's not yet 18. The double check on her age isn't immediately available, so I removed the name until it can be clarified tomorrow evening.

BTW: The Sheriff's Office provides the names of 16 and 17 year olds who get these tickets, but sticking to our policy of not including names of suspects who are under 18 (except for major offenses), The Batavian does not include the names.

Howard i don't understand why you print all these underage drinking arrests ..You do it after every Concert at Darien Lake ..Its not like they are all under 18..Most are collage age kids..Seems a little petty..No drug arrests ..I think that is news ..You don't list names of people getting speeding tickets or talking on cell phones every day ..Why underage drinking..

Mark, A) The Sheriff's Office releases the info and our policy is to publish all arrests/citations released. If they released a daily or weekly list of traffic citations, we would publish those. B) The Sheriff's Office expends significant resources providing law enforcement support to Darien Lake Theme Park, so it's important to document those law enforcement efforts. C) It's not my place to decide whether it's petty or not. Drunken driving kills a lot of people; drinking in large crowd like this seems to lead to problems; on the other side of the debate, some of us think the drinking age should be 18; but, as long as the law is the law, it's my job to report the consequences of the events. It's not my place to pass judgment on whether the citations should be issued or if the names should be released. Once the names are public information, it's my obligation to publish them.
