Canceled Council Meeting

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

The City Council meeting set for June 8th was cancelled after being scheduled for almost six months. The reason given was that some of the Republicans wanted to attend a $50 a plate party and there would not be a quorum for the meeting.

But one Republican stated she would do her duty and attend the Council meeting and that was Marianne Clattenburg. With her and the four Democrats, that would have been 5 out of 9 members, a quorum. Councilman Bill Cox will be away on a trip, so the meeting was really cancelled so that three members, Tim Buckley, Frank Ferrando and Bob Bialkowski can go to a party. By the way, they still get paid for that meeting also. Thanks guys, nice way to do your sworn job.

Two of them, Ferrando and Buckley, are running for office again this year, so I hope some people take that into consideration.

A thanks goes to Councilwoman Rose Mary Christian for trying to force the meeting to be held as scheduled and to Councilwoman Clattenburg for putting her duty before a party.

One odd question, why didn’t the City Democratic Chairwoman, Cathy DeJannerio, stand with her candidate, Rose Mary Christian, on this issue instead of siding with the Republican Party?

One can't help but wonder what the GOP members would have done if the situation was reversed.
Rosemary was 100% right on this one.

As a matter of fact, this did happen and the Dems. changed the date of their fund raiser so that nobody would have to miss a Council meeting.

Actions speak louder than words. The ones that BLEW-OFF the meeting, that they knew for a while was "scheduled", kinda sent the message that they don't give a hoot. Expensive Dinner-or-Important Council Meeting Hmmmmm This was a fundraiser?? How so, when the people in attendance are feasting like gluttens, and who payed for this?? The funds raised for the "Fundraiser" WTH

VOTE ROSEMARY CHRISTIAN !!

Really? You get fired up over this but not any of the crap in Washington?

Like Harry Reid saying he supported the racist Sotomayer though he hadn't read one of her rulings? That's just appalling.

How about Feinstien getting away will funneling a ton of no bid contracts to her husband? Nope no reason to be upset over that kind of corruption.

Instead we are upset because some locals wanted to go to a dinner. You aren't upset that Cox was away on a trip but you are upset about a fundraiser?

Clattenburg is a turn coat.

Pete, Im not upset, just commenting on the Batavian. I dont get into all the ins and outs of politics. I just look at the big picture. I dont have the knowledge you do, or anyone else that has a pashion for it. I just was commenting my opinion, and having coffee. Im not a Dem or a republican. I dont vote, for my own reasons, and want the most honest, hardworking, serious folks running our city.
Thats all buddy
ps: I give respect to the ones
who deserve it, like John Roach
whos intentions have always been
honest, and knowledgable, and for
the good of our community.

You miss the point.

Who said people are not mad about Washington or even Albany? There seem to be plenty of comments here about both, including yours.

This cancelled meeting, when there would have been a quorum, is seperate and local. As for Bill Cox, business is business, which you should approve of. The party get together the other three are going to is not rate even close to a business trip to earn money the old fashion way, working for it.

You say Clattenburg is a " turn coat",because she put the public and her duty to office before a political party night out? Explain that one to us.

You one horse town small time rabble rousers constantly try make a big deal outta absolutely nothing. Does doing this make you feel more important or does it just give all y'all something to do. Seems like no one around there is happy unless they can be miserable about some trivial and meaningless non-issue.

Texas runs better than New York.

We can not afford to cancel scheduled government meetings just for a party.

Richard, whats up buddy?? Hows the weather down there. When I lived in Houston it was 104 in rushhour traffic, ugg. Oh and there were tumbleweeds, and armadillos. How about the homeless under the bridges downtown. Kinda gives you a reality check. I'll always respect the green grass of home and how much I missed it, pulling into Ny in Charlies Dodge Superbee. I love it here, and just want whats best for us. We dont realize how good we have it here. You cant even go to a convenient store in Texas, without being approached by strangers, begging for money. There are so many walks of life there, it is dangerous. I dont know how you do it. At least we are for the most part safe here in Batavia.

ps: your on here so I guess you
dont have anything better to do
either, silly

The party is over so what good can come from whining and complaining? Seems like no one is happy unless they can be miserable about something - must give folks a false sense of purpose or something.

John, we have agreed on many things over the years but, this is not one of them. I understand what you’re doing but, this one is a bit of an overreaction in my opinion.

You are right about Marianne Clattenburg she is no turn coat, the city is lucky to have her on Council. She is willing to waste her own money for the tickets she bought, not to have to listen to petty political garbage.

Karen- There was nothing time sensitive about the meeting, that is why I postponed it. No one on Council takes a break, which includes our Republican members. As for the money, we don’t even make enough to cover our phone bill so, put that line in the trash can where it belongs.

Keep in mind everything about council is political. Everyone on council is a politician and going to political fundraisers is a big part of the job especially, during this time of year. Council people have very little control over the timing of their county political fundraisers and yet are expected to attend. Elected people have an obligation to attend their party functions and show support to those who helped put them in office. What right do they have to disrespect the people who volunteer their time putting up signs and going door to door for them by not showing up once a year to a political event?

As for Cathy DeJannerio, this is about treating others the way you wish to be treated yourself. She is a party chair and is not going to slap another chair in the face over a non-issue like this.

To conclude, Richard is right again….

Charlie,
My point is this is city business being put off, when there would have been a quorum, so three people can go to a party.

The three could go to their event and city business could have still been done, even if it was for only minor things.

But more to the point, people attacked Rose Mary only for saying that the Council meeting should not be cancelled and then her own Committee Chair took sides against her, in public.

She's a turn coat for not supporting her party's fundraiser.

Peter,

She is paying her money ($50). How many people will buy a ticket and not go? You know that is very common.

So, she pays her money, buys the ticket, but puts her public duty first, and for that you call her a "turn coat"?

I don't agree, but I understand your position.

John, we need six for a quorum but, that isn't really the issue. Frank asked me to consider moving the meeting date. I was NOT told to do it or they were not going to show up. That is a big difference. I understand the political side to this. Yes, the enemy is on the ground and any blue blooded Democrat is expected to kick them in the face. I am just not going to do it. It’s not right. I know, I am a turn coat traitor too..

So we disagree on this one issue, the world will still turn.

But the attacks on Rose Mary and Marianne are not fair or justified, don't you agree?

There is more to a fund raiser than dropping off your money.

Your PARTISAN rantings & ravings are so obviously slanderous, like the grade school bully calling other kids names because they're "different". Not surprising that the party that created the racist "southern strategy" is now dumping on minorities like women & Hispanics. Maybe it's an act of desperation, a cheap shot, as they back themselves into a corner in order to cowtow to their "base", while methodically destroying their "big tent" claim as well as any appeal they might have add to the independent votes they need to promote their agenda & win elections. The American people we're fooled in 2004 with Bush's "compassionate consevatism" like tax cuts only for the extremely wealthy & not the other 95% of Americans. They won't be fooled again. When I studied psychology at St. John Fisher the definition of the neuroses "projection" opened my eyes to how people who are guilty of something (in this case racism, narrow mindedness & bigotry) try to divert attention from their own shortcomings & failings by ironically attributing them to the person with whom that disagree.
