County's unemployment rate dips below 6 percent

By Howard B. Owens

For the first time since April 2008, Genesee County's unemployment rate dipped below 6 percent, being recorded at 5.8 percent for August.

That's three-tenths lower than July and a percentage point lower than August 2012.

Wyoming County's unemployment rate dropped to 6.6 percent, Orleans to 8.4 percent and Livingston to 6.7 percent.

In WNY, only Ontario County at 5.7 percent has a lower unemployment rate than Genesee County.

Buffalo's rate is 7.3 and Rochester is 6.9.

The state's rate is 7.5 and the U.S. rate is 7.3.

This is the answer. Republicans. Why Republicans? Because the voting district has been gerrymanderd to MAKE it Republican.

What was one of the few districts that voted for the bat weilding wacko Paladino for governor? Yes. The gerrymandered 26th district. There is nothing to brag about here.

You compared Genesee county to Monroe and Erie county. While we have our share of unemployable people, it doesn't begin to compare percentage wise to big cities.

Genesee county is fortunate that big businesses moved here to make yougurt, but it was not because the county is run by Republicans. Republicans don't give milk. Farmers in Genesee county have the herds of cows and capability to supply these companies with the milk they need. If the cows had been in Democratic Dutchess county, that's where the yogurt companies would have gone.

Do you remember what this county was like when Sylvania and other businesses moved away?

Good, successful business attract other businesses. Support businesses hire more people to take care of the demand for more food and merchandise. Our unemployment rate is a result of A LOT OF PEOPLE from both parties working their butts off to give working people a chance for good jobs.

Yeah cause I have seen the bars filled to capacity everyday and night with these unemployed....

Nothing like a generalization, if you see 2 people doing something, then everyone is doing it.

WOW! All this excitement for what again? What does it mean to have a lower unemployment rating? A: Having a work force with wages below the poverty line and requiring federal/state assistance?; B: Having a work force with wages just above the poverty line and requiring little federal/state assistance?; C: Having a work force with wages of mid middle class and requiring no federal/state assistance and who can give back and contribute to society as a team member?; D: All of the above.

I for one believe that, we need to strive for more than BS numbers. This Unemployment Rating is inaccurate of the real issue in this country. I would love to see umemployment be more than just having a job. It needs to be a job with merit to society as a whole. A job that, gives people a sense of self pride and a sense of contribution. You hear economists state, we need a technology trained work force. We also need, a manufacturing work force to employ those who are trained. We need to bring pride and honor back to the term, "Made in the U.S.A."

However, greed, self-entitlement attitudes, a lack of self-pride and just pure laziness rule our roost. Kids are not taught how to contribute to society or self-value. They are taught entitlement and how to take from society without giving back.

Heck, Republicians, Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives, etc...... ALL HOLD FAULT for America's downward spiral. Our government has become self-serving for the last three plus decades. Look at your Soldiers of the U.S.A.! They put their life on the line for you to speak, act, do what you want, etc...... Yet, they are the most unappreciated members of your government. Congress, Senate, and the Command in Chief, work less than most Americans but, want you to think they are always working for you. They earned 100s of thousands of dollars for a job they do not even perform well. They can retire after one term and earn a full wage retirement for life with full medical! We the People forget that, these self indulging windbags work for us. Yet, we see everyday the minority wishes being place over the majority.
