Genesee Country Farmers' Market opens in Downs parking lot June 9

When it opens for the season June 9, Genesee Country Farmers' Market will be celebrating its 41st year of providing "Locally Grown" fresh fruits, vegetables, and specialty items to the Greater Batavia Area.

The Genesee Country Farmers' Market will take place in the Batavia Downs Parking lot located on Park Avenue. Market hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays with the season running from Tuesday, June 9th, through Friday, Oct. 30th.

Market Manager Mike Bakos says "This market is the original Farmers' Market in Genesee County and remains a Grow-Your-Own market featuring locally grown produce and specialty items. Many of last year's vendors will be returning along with some new additions."

That's just the way it arrived in the press release. But it's not necessary to have it in quotes. In press releases, I've found that too many times things are either in quotes or they are capitalized for no good reason. I'm sure they simply mean to emphasize freshness, not imply specious local characteristics where there are none.

"I'm curious why "Locally Grown" is in quotes."

To emphasize that the food is truly locally grown and not imported from states that grow year round because of their climate.

Most of what you buy in fresh produce at stores like Tops, Aldis, Wegman's, Big M, etc. is grown out of state and imported from Florida, California, and other warm climate states, as well as other countries.

People should stock up on produce, and other food products, that are grown locally. It's not only better for you when it's fresh, but it helps support local farm economy as well.
