Simmons given 15 days in jail on harassment conviction

By Howard B. Owens

Jacquetta Simmons made it to court today, and despite a recommendation from her new attorney that she be sent to anger management classes, she was sentenced to 15 days in jail on her misdemeanor harassment conviction.

Previously, Simmons admitted to having physical contact with a 55-year-old woman at a church event in 2014.

City Court Judge Durin Rogers said he didn't think SImmons was a good candidate for counseling given her criminal history and lack of remorse.

According to a pre-sentence report, as discussed in court, Simmons blamed the victim for the altercation in 2014.

A week ago, Simmons failed to appear for her sentencing and her attorney at the time, Ann Nichols, asked to be removed from the case.

Public Defender Jerry Ader represented Simmons in court today.

Simmons made national headlines in 2011 when on Christmas Eve, while shopping at Walmart, she delivered "a roundhouse punch" to an older woman who was working as a cashier that day. The victim had asked to see a receipt from Simmons for prior purchases that Simmons brought with her when she came through a checkout line for a second time.

The case went to trial and Simmons was convicted by a jury of a felony assault charge. She was sentenced to five years in prison, but an appellate court overruled the sentence and the sentence was reduced to a year in jail.

Or, Jeff, what might be a more effective thing to happen is for her to run into an aged, female, "former" MMA "star".

Back in the 80's, I had a "relative" (related through marriage) who loved to fight. Now, he wasn't any "man-mountain" or anything, but, he WAS one tough guy, and, could usually hold his own. I won't mention any names - that's not necessary.

Well, I wasn't at the after-hours party where this happened, but, several people told me about it. Apparently, my "relative" showed up at a party, and started "bugging" some guy there. People who told me what happened said the other guy wasn't a very big guy. And, I was told, my "relative" kept bumping into him, and the guy just kept stepping away. I heard that the guy told my "relative", several times, "No, I don't want to fight. I'm just here to have a good time".

Finally, I guess the "little guy" had been pushed too much. I was told he said, "Look! I'm not here to fight, but, if I have to, I will. But, I'm not fighting inside here (they were in someone's living room).

So, my "relative" said, "OK. We'll go outside and fight". And, they both went outside. I was told that, about 2 minutes later, the little guy came back to the party, but, my "relative" didn’t.

Well, he wasn't seen around town for several days. I ran into him on Mill St. (Le Roy) three or four days later. He had sunglasses on, but, they didn't hide the bruises (I heard, from a reputable source, that his eyeball was 'half-hanging out of the eye socket' - that's how it was described to me, anyways).

As I said, I wasn't there, but, I guess he had run into someone who knew what he was doing. And, as far as I know, it was a long time before he got into another "scuffle". Ya know, I always like this "relative". Still do. BUT, it didn't bother me in the least that he had gotten his "clock cleaned". No matter how "tough" you are, eventually, you will find that there's someone a little tougher (or faster).

I abhor fighting, but, sometimes it's necessary. Maybe, just maybe, Ms. Simmons will someday pick on the wrong (RIGHT) person.
