The Batavian Challenge: Polls open at 6 a.m., so go vote

By Howard B. Owens

The Board of Election site provides a complete list of polling places in Genesee County.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., so if you're registered to vote, there's pretty much no excuse not to show up at your polling place today.

Even if you're fed up with the race, turned off by the robo calls and the greasy commercials, go vote. Turn in a blank ballot if you must.

This is shaping up to be a VERY tight race. Unlike any congressional race in this area for a long, long time, your vote carries more weight and counts like never before. Don't miss you chance to cast a ballot that really matters. Genesee County voters, especially, could make all of the difference in the race.

Here's the lastest on The Batavian challenge (pledges paid to local charities if Genesee County leads all counties in the NY-26 in voter turn out):

The Batavian, $100 to the Genesee Justice Foundation.

Jeff Allen, $100 to Care-A-Van Ministries.

Dan Jones, $26 dollars to Care-A-Van Ministries and another $26 dollars to the USO.

Dave Olsen, $25 tor GJ and $50 for The Loyola Recovery Foundation.

Joanne Rock has pledged $25 to GJ.

Lorie Longhany, $26 to the Child Advocacy Center wing of Genesee Justice.

Ricky G. Hale, a local plumber, has pledged $100 to Genesee Justice.

District Attorney Lawrence Friedman has pledged $1,000 -- with $500 going to the Genesee Justice Foundation and $500 going to Justice For Children GLOW Foundation. Any other members of the legal community like to step forward?

Ken Mistler pledged $100 for Volunteers for Animals.

County Clerk Don Read has pledged $100 for Crossroads House.

James Renfrew has pledged $50 for Genesee Justice.

Chris Charvella has pledged $50 to Loyola Recovery.

That's more than $1,700 in pledges.

Genesee County is counting on you to vote today.

Jeff Allen

I am heading out as soon as the polls open to be the first to write me in. If you are undecided, fed up, disappointed in the choices on the ballot, consider writing me in. Regardless of where you stand, don't stay home today. Get out and vote, show the district that Genesee County counts and help some great organizations at the same time.

According to the polls and pundits, this should be a very close race, it all depends on the turnout. If the only ones voting are strict partisans and political dorks (like me), then we won't truly have a "representative" even if it's only for 18 months, whatever district we wind up in will know that Genesee-ans are paying attention and care.

Yes! I'm anxious to have my say. I'm also anxious to clean the mud up. Will be glad not to have to listen to immature nonsense anymore. Grown folks wanting to "run" the government on our behalf by making and tossing making mud pies. Ugh!

Dave, if it comes down to either Hockul or Corwin we won't have a true representative anyway. Too much money from far away places to expect either of their attentions to be on little ol' us.

I'm happy I won't hear automated phone calls for awhile.

I'll be at my polling place around 3:30. I still haven't decided which candidate will get my vote.

Mike, may I suggest Joanne Rock or Jeff Allen? Ian Murphy is my choice but since I can only vote vicariously I'm hitting on everyone who can vote to vote like I want them to. Please, sir?

".....your vote carries more weight and counts like never before."

Nonsense. It's a race with zero implications for the House of Representatives. No matter who wins the Republicans will still hold almost a 50 seat majority in the House and in 18 months the district will be eliminated. The outcome of any pending legislation during the next year and a half isn't going to be impacted one way or the other based on today's results. This isn't Scott Brown running for the seat held by Ted Kennedy, not even close. Claims that this election is all about the future of Medicare is a bunch of hooey but it makes a nice sound bite for people that don't know any better.

Kevin, in a close election every vote counts. In making that statement I said nothing about medicare or Scott Brown. Because this heavily GOP district, close elections are rare, this is an unusual circumstance, which makes it a great time to vote.

I stand my the statement call your response nonsense.

Why do you want to discourage people from voting?
