Bomb robot finds box of perfume under mailbox

By Howard B. Owens

As it turned out, the only thing in the box was perfume being returned to QVC, but being left out in the open as it was, local law enforcement didn't want to take any chances.

The box was placed under a mailbox behind M&T Bank and City Slicker's in the Court Street Plaza.

The suspicious package was reported to Batavia PD at 8:30 a.m.

The State Police Bomb Squad was called and a robot was deployed to cut the box open and take a look inside.

The area was cordoned off for more than an hour during the operation.

"In this day and age you can never be too careful of anything that looks out of the ordinary," Officer Eric Hill said. "Most people would return those to the post office if it didn't fit in the mailbox, so that's why we were initially suspicious of the package."

That thing could be very useful when I don't want to get up and walk to the kitchen for a beer. It looks like it might even be able to make a sandwich too

I hope there was a return address so that the sender can be billed for the time and manpower wasted. The post office is not THAT far away from where the package was left. Come on people, use your brains. SIGH........

These days most people are acutely aware that anything can happen, anywhere, any place. In the off chance that this was an evil deed, the police would be raked over the coals for not using due diligence thereby putting people and businesses at risk.

The person that left the package there was obviously not thinking along those lines and probably regrets putting authorities in the position of having little choice but to "play with their toys."

I'm thinking, there are many people in Boston, that wish now, someone would have said something about that plain old backpack sitting next to one of their mail boxes. Just thinking.........

"If you see something.....say something"

Apparently Mark you are extremely unaware of what is going on in this world. Your cluelessness might land you in a dangerous situation and get you or others hurt. Just because, you think Batavia is not a valuable target does not mean someone else would not. Not to mention someone local could have a grudge against a business or person in this town and do just that which you least expect. Who in their right mind would put a package underneath a mail box? Someone who is unaware of how a mail box works or is just a plain moron.
