Genesee County sees month-over-month job growth

By Howard B. Owens

UPDATED 12:44 p.m.

Genesee County gained 300 non-farm jobs in February over January, according to NYS Department of Labor statistics.

For February 2011, there were 22,200 non-farm jobs reported in Genesee County compared to 21,900 in January.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dropped month-over-month from 9 percent to 8.7. That is down from February 2010 when it was 9.5 percent.

That's still higher than the 12-month low of 6.4 percent in August 2010.

The 12-month high in jobs is 24,400 in June 2010.

Month-over-month, manufacturing jobs held steady at 2,800, and up from 2,700 in February 2010.

Private-sector service jobs also held steady at 12,300 -- up from 12,100 in February 2010.

Government jobs grew from 6,000 to 6,300.

There are 33,300 people -- up 100 from January -- in Genesee County's labor force. The total number of people employed is 29,500. That's up 200 from January.

Am I reading this post correctly? Non-farm jobs increased by 300 but private sector jobs held steady? So that means Genesee County gained 300 public sector jobs?

"Genesee County gained 300 non-farm jobs in February over January, according to NYS Department of Labor statistics.

Government jobs grew from 6,000 to 6,300."

Everything else "held steady".

Um, I'm no mathematician, but to me, this is scary - and typical.

Thank goodness for the GCEDC spending our tax dollars so freely on salaries and bonuses, in line with other government bloat. Otherwise, FAIRLY taxed businesses may start selling products again and have to start hiring employees away from the government. That would kinda be like capitalism, and we certainly can't have that in this enlightened time, can we!

I wonder if we added those on public assistance under the title "government (non)worker, what these numbers would look like compared to the revenue generating private sector jobs.

The head line should be ....Government jobs grew from 6,000 to 6,300...Thats not a good thing..That is the only reason Genesee County sees month-over-month job growth...
What were these government jobs..That should be the story..

If you want to see an increase in jobs here in the U.S. you have to start at the root of the problem. American trade and industrial policies are upside down. Tax breaks going to corporations to invest outside the U.S. who export good paying jobs in exchange for cheap labor in China, India, Mexico and a host of other countries. The corporations increase their profits at the direct expense of the American middles class.

The economic collapse that we have seen is a direct result of these trade and industrial policies. The investment bankers, hedge fund managers and mortgage lenders conned average home owner into borrowing against a inflated value of their most valuable asset so they could by more of the cheap goods and materials from the off shore factories bought and subsidized with our taxes and hard earned money.

Do you remeber Sylvania, Westinghouse, Motorola or Endicott Johnson factories? Local manufatures of TVs, Radios, home appliances and shoes, that is who they were and they are gone thanks to the trade and industrial policies that have been forced on us by the corporation who have bought and sold both Republican and Democrats for the last half century. If we want change we will have to make some changes, starting with who we elect to fill the vacant seat in the 26th Congressional district....Voters have a clear choice between a Republican who has no experience in creating jobs but spins a good tale, the Democrat who is long on political experience with no experience at creating jobs or Jack Davis who has a proven track record of creating good paying jobs and has long opposed the trade and industrial policies that have created the economic mess we all are face with today.

I want to see future generations enjoy the same standard of living I have enjoyed and that only comes when we have good paying jobs that provide long term gainful employment. Jack Davis has the track record of creating jobs that is a fact, Jack Davis has a long history of opposing the trade and industrial policies that have exported our jobs.
