Hawley: Assembly budget pays little heed to Upstate

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

“The Assembly’s one-house budget resolution all but ignores the needs of Upstate families,” Hawley said. “Unfortunately, a large portion of economic development funding was gutted from the budget proposal, funding that my district has used to upgrade its infrastructure, help struggling companies stay afloat, and expand and foster community projects. It includes a crippling minimum-wage hike, which will surely stifle business expansion, restrict the ability to hire new employees, and raise prices for groceries and other consumer items."

“I have been fighting tooth and nail to restore the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) education cuts that were unfairly taken from our school districts in 2010, and our House’s budget resolution repays $150 million less than it did last year toward restoration of these cuts. Furthermore, Assembly Majority members had yet another chance to pass meaningful ethics reform and adopt Gov. Cuomo’s proposals. They ignored many of the governor’s reforms and have left New York vulnerable to more abuses of power and taxpayer money. We can and should do better for Upstate families, and I will work with my legislative colleagues to make sure this does not stand.”

First of all, one issue is obviously missing in Assemblyman Hawley's assessment here. NYSAFE. That's the relatively new law in NYS that violates the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution. I realize that Hawley has indicated that he supports repeal of this law and would work to do so. However it is obvious that this will never happen via the Assembly because of the heavily slanted membership being about 70% NYC progressives, who have no ethical alliegance to the Constitution. Nevertheless, as I have said repeatedly, this does not absolve Assemblyman Hawley, or any of his colleagues to ignore the Oath of Office they swore, to ‘support the Constitution of the United States’. Representative Hawley has an obligation to turn down any Budget that contains funding for NYSAFE. He knowingly has ignored this obligation the past two years and it sounds like he is planning on doing it again.

I have to wonder, why there seems to be a real disconnect between the two chambers in the Legislature. Just yesterday, Assemblyman Hawley’s counterpart [and fellow Republican] Senator Ranzenhofer put out a statement on the Budget process in the Senate http://thebatavian.com/howard-owens/ranzenhofer-releases-statement-budg… and it sure sounded very positive for WNY. Oddly, Ranzenhofer said “It ends the notorious Gap Elimination Adjustment and its devastating impact on our local school districts.”, while at the same time Hawley is saying “I have been fighting tooth and nail to restore the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) education cuts that were unfairly taken from our school districts”. So, which is best for our district???

However, one thing is consistent between the two Genesee County representatives... neither even mentions NYSAFE nor any effort to remove it. Even though the Genesee County Legislature, all the Towns in the county and the Batavia City Council have released formal statements of opposition to NYSAFE and a call for it’s repeal.

Leaves me wondering where these two elected representatives get their direction from.

Mork. I'm a little confused on the part of your comment that stated, "They pretty much mean nothing..."

They must've meant something, as they elicited comments from some readers here (as exhibited by yours & Brian's comments on this Hawley press release).

Au contraire', Mork. I understood completely that the word 'they' was used to connote 'Hawley's press releases'.

Anyone with pretty-much a 6th-grade reading comprehension would've realized THAT (well, maybe not today's 6th graders, but, definitely from when I went to school).

So Ed why don't you give your viewpoint, rather than just making condescending innuendos laced with some childish name calling.

You said “Au contraire', Mork. I understood completely”... well judging by the lack of anything substantive in your posts on this topic, it leaves one to think you don’t understand anything at all about the issue. If you do/did then offer some debate/discussion, not just simple ridicule.

Well, Brian. As you asked for my viewpoint, here it is.

First off, if I had wanted to comment (directly) on Mr. Hawley's press release, trust me, I would have. Instead, I chose to comment on Mark's 1st comment. To which he (attempted) to explain what he meant by the use of the word 'they'.

My second comment was to advise him that I had realized what he was alluding to. Perhaps (PERHAPS!) I may have stepped on SOME of today's 6th-graders' toes, by the way I worded it. I would love to have Jesse Watters go to any number of today's junior-high schools and see how the 6th-graders understood the 'they' usage. Who knows? I might be surprised. But, I doubt it.

I guess my biggest regret here is that I've apparently misplaced my cherished copy of "Brian's Rules of Commenting"! I've searched high & low throughout my whole house, paying extra-special attention in the bathroom (where I keep my CRAP), but, alas, it seems to have grown feet and walked away!

Does this mean I'm banished from these revered pages?
If so, PLEASE, send me a new copy (free of charge, though, as I'm still trying to unload my collection of Pet Rocks and other useless stuff).

Got any more viewpoints you'd like from me, Brian?
