Hochul appointed to Homeland Security Committee

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Kathy Hochul (D-NY26) announced that she will serve on the House Committee on Homeland Security in the 112th Congress.

“I look forward to working hard for the people of the 26th District as a Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security,” said Congresswoman Hochul. “As a Representative of a district right by the border, issues of homeland security greatly impact the people of my district and I will work tirelessly to ensure their safety.”

Congresswoman Hochul began her work immediately, meeting with Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, where the two discussed national security issues facing our nation and discussed international trade and travel across the Peace Bridge in Buffalo.

Congresswoman Hochul has already voted on issues of vital importance to our homeland security. She voted against H.R. 2017, FY 2012 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, which makes more than a billion dollars in cuts to critical local and national security programs.

Instead of cutting funding to programs that protect Western New Yorkers, Congresswoman Hochul supported the Clarke-Higgins-Reichert-Tonko Amendment to reform the Urban Area Security Initiative so that Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse would continue to be eligible for funds that prevent, protect and safeguard these cities against terrorist attacks.  Prior to the passage of this amendment, the bill would have restricted funding to only 10 cities.

Congresswoman Hochul recognizes that we must be vigilant in our efforts to protect our communities and borders against terrorists.

...well...I guess it will at least be another expensive year and a half...

Was almost afraid she would do something different. At least the 26th will be protected...against you know-terrorist threats.

Fighting for our share...

GIVE ME LIBERTY...

Boy, having a clueless democrat, that just got to Washington via forfeit by the republicans, on the Homeland Security Committee really makes me feel safe.

You?

Bob, I beg your pardon. "Clueless" will never ever be a word that describes Kathy Hochul.

You want clueless -- here's clueless

Bob, you want clueless, here's clueless...she may only aspire to be President, he actually is! And this doesn't include many of the more recent embarrassments.

you've got to be cluless if you have fallen for fox 5 propaganda videos like the one cited by mr. allen. if one is so gullible as to you rely on fox 5 right wing extremist propaganda for news & commentary, you're probably incapable of analytical thinking in the first place

Bob, I feel a little of that insecurity as well, without another gun toting, war mongering republican filling that seat, it makes me shudder.
Palin should go back to Alaska, shoot herself in the head, with a real gun, instead of touring the country shooting herself in the foot. Go Palin, you guarantee victory for your opponents.

David, how is it propaganda just because Fox aired it? They are video clips of stuff he actually said. Maybe it's because no one else is airing his gaffes since the other networks are bending over backwards to protect him

I finally found 27 minutes to watch the Rand Paul video, thanks Howard and it would nice if Ms. Hochul sees it too. It's long, but well worth listening to, guy makes a lot of sense. BTW you don't need to watch it, I was doing something else while listening. Unlike me or my son, he obviously listened to his father. Here's a bit more on the subject:

Jeff, I think the difference is that you have to take time to compile a video of Obama's miscues.

All you need to do to make a Palin gaffe reel is to stick her in front of a camera and ask her what color the sky is.

Kathy deserves congratulations for her selection to committee membership. WNY deserves better than a feel-good press release.

The Patriot Act remains a ripe plum for the justice department and prosecutors who for decades have vigorously battled the Constitutional protections afforded citizens charged with a crime. It took a national panic attack, a bonehead president and a few hundred members of Congress with blinders in place to accomplish the travesty AKA The Patriot Act.

The name alone is enough to induce projectile vomiting. A press release that dresses it up with bows and ribbons...

Per the Boston Herald, and the historical accounts they referenced, including Paul Revere's own journal, Sarah Palin's comments regarding his famous ride were correct.

http://bostonherald.com/news/us_politics/view.bg?articleid=1343353

“It seems to be a historical fact that this happened,” he said. “A lot of the criticism is unfair and made by people who are themselves ignorant of history.”

Oh come on kevin, did you actually read the article you referenced? The 2 historians were lukewarm at best. Are they liberal partisans playing Gotcha too? Look, she goofed up, so what. I kind of like her, she's unscripted and spontaneous. I wouldn't ever vote for her, but she is entertaining. And looks better in running shorts than Obama ever will.

The idea of defending Palin's remarks are laughable and what she said on Fox about it only digs herself in deeper.

She clearly meant -- through the "ringing the bells" part of the quote that Revere was using bells to warn the British. The journal entry makes it clear, he did not do that.

If you read his journal entry, his ride was already over when he was captured by British officers and ordered at gun point to give up information. An officer literally threatened to blow his brains out.

That isn't a "warning" in the sense of, "hey, you better watch it, the Americans are waiting for you." It's a, "I want to keep my brains in tact, thank you very much, so here's what I know."

Palin made herself look foolish with the first quote and makes herself look like a liar by defending it.

C.M., we specifically asked the candidates a question about the Patriot Act. Hochul, much to my disappointment, said she would have voted, had she been in office at the time, to re-authorize it.

"As a Member of Congress, I would have voted to extend the expiring provisions. While we must continue to ensure that we are protecting basic civil liberties, we must also continue to take a proactive approach in our fight against terrorism both here and abroad. "

No Chris, you don't have to take much time at all compiling a list of stupid things our President says, all you have to do is put him at a podium and have him go off script.
Here he is insulting the Jeep Wrangler in front of the people who build them.

Dave, put it in the "if Bush had said it" or the "if Sarah had said it" slamosphere. You and the rest of the media wouldn't be passing it off as a bad joke. If I actually took the time and space to list all of the stupid things our President has said or done, it would be a very long post. I can bet there would be MANY that you've haven't seen since he has gotten such coddling by the media.

"You and the rest of the media wouldn't be passing it off as a bad joke." I'm not part of the media. Just some hick with an internet connection. I'm no Obama lover, but that's a reach, plain and simple. I'm quite sure he or anyone else is not perfect, makes mistakes and makes stupid comments. A bad joke about a Jeep Wrangler, however does not compare to attempting to revise history to match an incorrect comment. Personally, although i dislike Republicans more than I dislike Democrats (I really wish Ron Paul would leave the GOP) if the Repub's can come up with a better candidate, Obama can be beat, he's not that great. I don't know who that could be. The GOP will never get behind Paul.

The 2 main problems, in my humble opinion, with Presidential elections are that to get the job today, a person has to spend more than a year going around the country telling everyone how wonderful and smart they are, must love the sound of their own voice, must have a massive ego, must have a support staff of toadys to keep them upbeat, and then make promises to thems that has the money to fund all of this. Those promises many times contradict what the candidate has said to the people, and if he/she wasn't one already they become liars. Until we get the special interests money (and that includes the media) out of the process, and convince a majority of voters to actually vote, we will have more of the same. We get the government & leaders we deserve.

I wish Paul would leave GOP as well. He is so much better than them. The GOP is a joke. They're willing to spend more time and money on telling people what they can do in they're personal lives than they are at really fixing anything.

Oh...and this massive deficit? Yeah...that was our boy W there. The fact that any Republican can publically defend that baffoon's ass is amazing to me. I'm no Obama supporter, but he never lied about what he was.

Obama was THE most Liberal voting Senator on the floor. The man can oratate, and he did so with beautiful grace, duping millions. But he never lied about how he was.

Georgie Porgie there, who I believe created more words during eight years, soverenitization anyone?) ran as a Compassionate Conservative who wanted to bring "fiscal stability and morality back to the White house."

Uh yeah...how'd that work out?

Dave, I'm not putting his Jeep Wrangler comment directly up against the Paul Revere gaffe, Sarah can't wiggle out of that one no matter how hard she tries. I'm putting their assemblies of gaffes up against each other. A true critical look makes Harvard law professor, intellectual voice of our times, oceans are going to recede, tingle up my leg, Nobel prize winning, transparent President look like a rank amateur.
