Photo: Big bass reeled in at Dewitt

By Howard B. Owens

Tracy Avenue resident Richard Stevens holds a bass he said weighed in at 5 pounds and was 20-inches long. Stevens and his friend Gavin Demmer, he said, caught it at Dewitt Recreation Area this afternoon.

Re-read the text message ... there's some reference to something being 20 lbs, but a previous message said 5 lbs, 20 inches ... corrected the post.

That is an old fish. You can tell by the size of the head compared to the body. It must have been a real monster in it's prime. As a fish ages, it loses it's ability to catch bait fish to feed and it's body shrinks in size. I use to catch Northern Pike with huge heads and small bodies. It is a shame, but that is how Nature works.

TP Hunt is right, thats something that old divers passed along to us new divers I dont have many pics from under water of largemouth bass, but the same is true of smallmouth bass perch and walleyes too.

Rule of thumb my grandfather taught me as well, if you ever catch a fish that its head is small compared to its body size, let it go it's gonna grow bigger.
