Photo: GCC students and staff clean up R. Stephen Hawley Drive

By Howard B. Owens

Staff and students of Genesee Community College were on R. Stephen Hawley Drive yesterday picking up roadside garbage. Within two hours, the group gathered more than 17 bags of garbage from along the shoulders of the roadway.

The project is part of the lead-up to Saturday's Cool Kids! ECO-Fest at GCC. On Saturday, you'll be able to come by the Batavia campus and drop off your old electronics for recycling and get the pressure on your tires checked.

Thanks also to GCC Earth Club members Yvonne Gavett, Sherry Saxby, Sarah Barnes and Neal Kabesh - they helped on the cleanup at the other end of Stephen Hawley Drive but had to get to class before the photo was taken.

Eco-Fest is happening tomorrow 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the GCC Batavia campus. It's a free, family-friendly event full of activities and vendors aimed at increasing environmental awareness.

Bring your old TV's, electronics, sneakers, books and worn American flags for free 'green disposal,' watch demonstrations demonstrations of the “Big Foot Baler” as it wraps agricultural plastic waste for recycling into other plastic items; observe and learning about wildlife; and don't miss the end-of-the-day ECO-raffle of great green prizes, including a 21-speed mountain bike!

Thank you a great project. Funny I drove down that road just the other day and thought , how bad it was looking, and how the winter left it pretty dirty. Thank you.
