Photo: New deli planned for Ellicott Street location

By Howard B. Owens

This sign appeared in a shop window on Ellicott Street in the last day or so.  Nobody was around this morning, so no word on when the new deli might open.

It will be Ellicott Street's third deli. This summer, Molasses Hill moved from Alexander to a location near Harvester Ave., and, of course, on the corner of Liberty and Ellicott is Southside Deli. That location has been a deli or meat market for more than 100 years.

There's been a bit of a boomlet on Ellicott this past year, with four, now five, new shops opening for business.

Oh boy... another deli? We already have too many pizzerias and too many salons... but they are all surviving... good luck to these guys!

Not sure if we need another deli on the southside or not,do we want one? heck yea! With the advent of Molasses Hill opening in Batavia this passed summer the bar is set pretty high for bombers, the meat and cheese on the Philley steak bomber are incredibale to say the least, and are very good. Southside Deli is and has been a quality deli for many years as mentioned, I might add provides a very good submarine sandwich (The Nuclear)for one is great! Just maybe a new twist awaits us with the newest deli, let's hope so because I love to eat as many of us do.
Good luck to the new deli,
