Police warn of 'You won the lottery' scam

By Howard B. Owens

Press release from the Batavia PD:

The Batavia Police Department is investigating an incident of attempted fraud. A Tracy Avenue resident has reported being contacted by telephone by a male subject who identified himself as a lottery official. The local resident was informed that he or she had won a lottery and needed to forward an amount of cash in order to collect the winnings.

The male caller provided some legitimate lottery information, however, identified himself by different names during separate conversations.

The resident did not forward cash as requested and has been advised to cease any contact with the suspect.

Residents need to be on guard for this and similar incidents of fraud that are continuing and ongoing.

If this guy calls, ask for a number where you can call him back - then if he GIVES you one, call the Sheriff's Department [344-2550] and give the number it to THEM. Chances are, the lotto fake guy won't give you a number, but it's worth a try.

Batavia Police report that there has been a rash of citizens receiving phonecalls asking if their refigerators are running. Residents need to be on guard for these types of scams and do not, repeat do not, try to catch your refrigerator.
Don't buy any door to door blacktop or sealer either and lock the damn doors on your car, take the keys also. Don't leave your wallet and laptop computer on the front seat, with the windows down, on a dark street, Batavia Police said also, as well, too.
