Reader Photos: Bear visits Batavia tire shop

By Howard B. Owens

A bear seemed to be in the market for a new set of tires yesterday evening, paying a visit to Sloat Tires on Clinton Street Road, Batavia.

The photos were taken by Diane Scott and provided by Todd Sloat.

CORRECTION: The bear was actually shopping for tires THIS MORNING. Yesterday evening, it was reportedly seen checking into the educational opportunities at GCC.

I heard there were bear sightings in the Seven Springs area. We had one visit our deck early in the spring. I guess bears are here to stay.

We live just down the road from Sloats. I do in fact have a bird feeder. I suppose I had better get my camera and keep the little ones in! :)

Friends have a beautiful log cabin home in Forrestville. From the guest bedroom windows on the side of the house, one can see a small apple orchard that is visited twice a day by deer.
The guest bedroom windows on the back of the house look over a patio and a small yard leading to a flower bed.
One morning, while everyone was still sleeping, I made coffee and went out on the patio. I notice something awry in the flower bed but couldn't process what it was.
Suddenly, it dawned on me that all of the birdfeeders were on the ground. Not one of the seven or eight were standing.
Then, I looked down the hill where the car was parked.
The night before, while rummaging for something in the back seat, I took out a cooler bag that held six cans of pop. I placed it by the wheel well and forgot to put it back.
I noticed that it was now a distance away from the car.
As I got closer to the cooler, I could smell bananas. I forgot that there were three bananas in the cooler. The bag was shredded, the banana peels were left on the ground and the pop untouched.
As I was picking up the mess, my hostess walked down the hill. "I see the bear is back.", she casually commented.
"It got the birdfeeders, too.".
Those birdfeeders were less than 25' from where we were sleeping. I can only imagine my surprise had I gone out a little earlier and found that bear reaching for bird seed or enjoying those bananas.

I have seen coyotes in my back yard at night and have called the cops because Ive seen them with dead neighbor hood cats hanging in their mouths. But the police say theres nothing you can do about it unless they attack a person. I think they are coming from the sand wash on Cedar Street. Because the fenced in area next to my house that surounds Grahams leads there.
