Tires slashed on cars off Park Road

By Howard B. Owens

City police were dispatched about five minutes ago to the rear parking area of Blockbuster on Lewiston Road for a report of an employee's tire slashed.

Now a Sheriff's deputy is being sent to the same area (city limit is at Park Road) for more reports of slashed tires. It isn't clear from what we picked up off the scanner which parking lot this additional vandalism took place in.

UPDATE 1:49 a.m.: Apparently, the Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction on the customer parking lot on Lewiston. That is where all of the tires were slashed, including the one initially reported behind the building in employee parking.

UPDATE 1:59 a.m.: If I heard this right, now there's a report of a Jeep outside Sunny's (in the City Centre) with its tires slashed.

UPDATE 7:52 a.m.: The Sheriff's Office put out a news release confirming that the tires were slashed on three cars in the Batavia Downs parking lot on Park Road some time between 9 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Anybody with information is asked to contact Deputy Kevin McCarthy at 345-3000, ext. 3237.

UPDATE 8:04 a.m.: An officer handling another similar incident inquired with dispatch about other reports overnight. There was another car vandalized in the city that was reported early this morning and a car break-in on Park Road.

UPDATE 9:25 a.m.: Batavia PD dispatched to Batavia Commons and Valu Plaza for more tires slashed.

You are right Howard, and it happened to be a friends Jeep in the Sunny's parking lot. It is very inconsiderate for whoever thinks that it is humorous in the dead of winter to slash someones tires let alone anytime during the year, and frustrating I'm sure for both those involved and the police officers dealing with 5 incidents in a short period of time. It really makes no sense to me why someone would slash tires. I mean, it can't honestly benefit the one slashing the tires in anyway, rather than to humor them in some sick way. And for someone to physically get out of their car in the cold of winter to take time to do that to someone's tires, honestly... get a life!

Nicely put, Arlana. I agree, these actions seem to be totally random and done just for the sake of causing trouble. Best of luck to the Batavia PD and Sheriffs to catch the people that did this.

Someone will have alot of restitution to pay. Figure $300.00 to $600.00 or more per vehicle for the cost of the tires alone (if all 4 tires were slashed.) Add a towing charge per vehicle to that. It's gonna be a big bill for the moron who did this. Hope whatever satisfaction they got out of it was worth what it's going to cost them in the end. If the person(s)is a minor, I hope their parents are held responsible.

I can't imagine they will catch whoever is doing the damage, but for the record, the cost is over four hundred dollars, as I just heard from my friend whose car was one who had her tires (2 of them) slashed, and that is with the price of tires on some winter sale. I would like to think they would catch whoever is doing this.

It's possible -- though not confirmed -- that at least one locations had a security camera aimed at the location of some of the slashing, which at least creates some hope there will be evidence leading to an arrest.

How about footprints in the snow? And doesn't the Sheriff's Department have a K-9 anymore? I would just love, just once, to catch someone doing something like this.
