Today's Poll: How often do you eat at a restaurant in WNY but outside of Genesee County?

By Howard B. Owens

I think the reason why so many Genesee county people eat out in different counties every week is more due to the malls/shopping in Buffalo and Rochester rather than the lack of good restaraunts here. We really could use a real bonifide Italian restaraunt here though.

There really isn't anything that I could see being done in Genesee County that would change our Entertainment habits, We dine locally two or three times a week, we go to Buffalo one or two times a month.

Entertainment options are usually the reason, but sometimes it is a simple matter of change of pace.

While I totally believe in buying local as a rule, I refuse to deny myself or my family some of the chain restaurants like Joe's Crab Shack, Olive Garden or Red Lobster for example because the local population isn't large enough to support them. Likewise, on occasion my wife and I go out seeking fine dining, the four and five star variety, change of pace again is a major factor in our choice

There are two primary factors to consider in interpreting these results:

1) Disposable income.
2) Awareness of opportunities.

There are some Very Good restaurants, and diners, in this county. If you only think of chain establishments when looking for dinner out, you are cheating yourself. Look for the local. Look for the established restaurants and diners. If they sucked, they would not have been around for years and years.

If you demand corporately approved menu options and group tested entrées, you deserve the slop you get.

Be an explorer. I can list out best dishes at a dozen restaurants in the GLOW area based upon my self-centered likes. If you can't, what HAVE you been doing with your evenings out? REALLY, what have you been spending your money on?

Most times that the wife and I eat outside the county, it's after a doctors appointment, or testing etc. Her in Buffalo, me in Rochester. It's nice to see a different menu every now and then. We eat at many different restaurant's within the county, with the same menu's again and again. It gets boring. Simple as that. We have our favorites, but sometimes you want something different.

I agree with Sam....a GOOD Italian Restaurant !!!

Why do we go to doctors, and have testing done outside the county? That's another poll for another time.

Kyle,

I agree with a lot of what you say, but in the same token, there are many locally owned restaurants that are well known for serving slop on a plate, which seems to attract a customer base of people who don't care what it looks, smells, or tastes like.

As an example, I give you the Sport of Kings diner, and Miss Batavia.

When we dine out, we're not looking for just any place that has food, but rather a place that offers something that I couldn't make myself at home for less money, but also something I couldn't find anywhere else either.

Just about every locally owned restaurant/diner has meatloaf on their menu. Meh! Unless that meatloaf is knock my socks off never had anywhere ever delicious, I'll pass.

But I do agree that locally owned, as opposed to corporate chains is the way to go. If I want seafood, the bottom of the barrel choice would always be Red Lobster, which I consider to be the McDonald's of seafood restaurants. I prefer a locally owned restaurant that specializes in seafood.
