Today's Poll: Who should be the Genesee County's newsmaker of the year?

Chris, Time's person of the year has picked people like Stalin, Hitler and Arafat. But I didn't go with person of the year as the title in this poll because that still denotes somebody who had an impact.

The biggest names in local news this past year didn't necessarily have impacts on people's lives, but they did make a lot of news.

Now, if I did a poll for "Geneseen of the Year" -- same name as the Chamber award -- the names would be different.

Dave, Tom Rivers, good suggestion. I should have thought of him. Apologies to Tom.

I agree that this shouldn't be an award. However, Ms. Corona did make a great deal of news. She doesn't deserve anymore publicity. Thanks for the poll, though, Billie - very interesting.

Without a doubt, the Genesee County "newsmaker" of the year is Howard Owens. That's is not a put down, it is the truth. Nothing is "News" until someone reports it.

I personally believe that any type of recognition should go to someone or someones that actually make a positive impact on people's lives. Not that reading about Susan Corona's trainwreck of a life isn't entertaining... But How about Don Carroll, who seems to always be donating his time or organizing some charity. Or all of the local musicians that donate their time and talent to raise money for so many others. Or Rick Mancuso for donating TF Browns as a location for so many of these events. People like this don't often make the news but they are there making a difference for the people of Batavia. I also agree with George, Howard you are doing an amazing job with this site and you deserve some recognition yourself.

Great, so far 220 people think someone making a fool of themselves in public constitutes news. I enjoy watching Family Guy, but that's because it's a cartoon, real life buffoons, not so much.

Brett,
Point well taken. However, as Billie explained, it has to do with frequent headliners, and not Pulitzer prize nominations.

If you had asked me to name the 'person of the year' I would have had a different answer. However, newsmaker of the year without a question goes to Suzanne Corona. Her escapades became fodder for not only statewide, but national and international news outlets.

Tim Walton should be added to this list! This kid is a true major local success story. He deserves the "Good News maker of the year award" in my book.

How about the members of our Armed Forces that put their lives on the line every day for our freedom? After all, without them, we wouldn't be allowed to express our opinions. This site would be just a bunch of news stories.
