Video: Staying safe in hot weather

By Howard B. Owens

In case you haven't noticed, it's hot.

The current temperature is in the mid 90s with a heat index over 100 degrees.

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 7 p.m.

For the next 10 days, at least, there is no relief from the heat in sight, unless you consider 87 degrees instead of 90 to be relief.

This morning, we did a quick video with City of Batavia Fire Chief Jim Maxwell about staying safe in hot weather.

Oh, CM, we're here. Question: At 55, how many "heat waves" have I been through? No doubt this one is extreme, but is it enough to further change the direction of our nation's future?

I think not.

Please let me know when a viable alternative energy source is found that the tree huggers will embrace.

Got your A/C on, CM? :)

My comment was inspired by recollections of winter temps being cited to debunk Global Warming. I was certainly not making a case from a single spate of days in the 90s. Sheesh- the heat must be erasing folks' sense of humor!

I was going to complain about how hot it is, then I realized that: 1) It isn't 109 degrees; 2) I'm not 5,700 miles from home; 3) I'm not dressed in a full BDUuniform and helmet and carrying 70+ lbs.; and 4) There is very little chance that anyone will shoot at me or that I might drive over a bomb in the road today! Thanks to all who serve.

In additon to my previous post - in light of the barn fire last night, and the fire in Indian Falls, the house fire recently and the grass fires that have occurred and will occur, and all the motor vehicle the accidents - a HUGE THANK YOU to all the VOLUNTEER FIREMEN throughout the area. These people risk their lives, too.

This weather just isn't giving us any relief. We need rain badly. The grass is turning brown and the farmers need it for their crops.

Bob, in answer to your question regarding AC... I've been roofing all week. Even when the inside temp is 80, it still feels cool compared to being on a roof nailing shingles. I have the option of AC, but I generally use an exhaust fan at night and close up the windows before the sun comes up. With the geothermal system, I could air condition the house using about $2.50 / day (electric) to keep the temperature at 73 degrees.
