'We've got icy conditions on every road'

By Howard B. Owens

The Weather Service continues to insist that this storm will last until midnight and about an hour ago, predicted another inch of snow.

From about 4 p.m., the snow has been falling reasonably fast in Downtown Batavia.

There are reports of cars off the road in several parts of the county and a couple of minor accidents in the city.

A highway worker informed dispatchers a little while ago, "We've got icy conditions on every road out here. There is snow, sleet and freezing rain."

Drive carefully.

It was amazing to see how people "forgot" already that road conditions like this are slippery. I had someone pass me in a 40 mile an hour zone (and I was going the speed limit)and I bet they were going at least 50 maybe 60.
Later I saw an SUV off the road that had hit a tree.

I wonder if some people hadn't already had their snow tires removed.

Plus, daytime snow fall seems to lead to more accidents. The steady fall of this snow over a prolonged period of time creates, I think, a much more difficult problem for road crews to keep up with. You've got constant snow, sleet and freezing rain during daytime traffic hours.

That's a lot of roadway to keep clear and salted when 30 or 60 minutes after a truck passes, it's iced over again.

So people are out and about on a lot of untreated, or less than ideally treated, roadways.
