Helga E. Baumann, 89, of Batavia passed away on Friday September 15, 2017 at the United Memorial Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 23, 1928 in Wuppertal, Germany, the oldest of four children to the late Wilhelm and Hilde (Wohlgemuth) Niedt. In addition to her parents, Helga is predeceased by her son Wolfgang K.H. Fuchs; sister Gundhild Kilian-Rivas and brothers Willi Niedt and Wolfgang Peter Niedt

Born just prior to the great depression, her childhood saw the desperation of the great depression and the devastation of World War II. She came into adulthood in the rubble of the war’s aftermath. Helga and her siblings survived the difficult time with love, strength and humor led by their beloved and revered mother as Wilhelm had died in the latter days of the war. As the oldest sibling she took on the role that she continued to play the rest of her life; a strong, loving caregiver. She took care of her younger brothers all of their lives. She cared for her sister as she was dying of cancer, her mother in the last days of her life, as well as her beloved son Wolfgang during his final months. Helga loved and cared for family, friends, neighbors and strangers. Whether it was crocheting a blanket for someone’s new baby, sewing someone’s wedding gown or costumes for the local theater productions. She volunteered her time through church, Boy Scouts Women’s Auxiliary and Crossroads House in Batavia, she was always there. Helga was a selfless giver until her final days. Helga and her husband Dieter shared a beautiful life together raising their 3 children in a home that was always full of love and laughter.

She is survived by her beloved husband Dieter Baumann whom she has been married to for 53 years; daughters Birgitt (Gary) Hammond of Batavia and Linda (Richard) Conroy of Batavia; 5 grandchildren Jennifer (Jeff) Miller, Jason (Sara St. John) Hammond, Tara (John) Kaczorowski, Michelle Conroy and Juliana Fuchs; 5 great-grandchildren Madison, Wolfie, Lily, Ava and Alex along with many nieces and nephews.
