George J. Capp

ROCHESTER - George J. Capp, 86, of Rochester, passed away Sunday, (February 2, 2020), at his home in Rochester.

Mr. Capp was born March 22, 1933, in Batavia, a son of the late John and Mary (Lis) Czapeczka.

Mr. Capp served his country honorably with the Air Force where he was a mechanic.  Following his discharge, he worked for many years as a mechanic with the US Post Office in Rochester. George, or as he preferred to be called, Capp, was the longest running patron of the Strathallen Hotel in Rochester.  He was a talented gardener, an expert craftsman, and an excellent chef.  He will be remembered for his love of classical music, and his willingness to help most anyone who he thought needed it.  He was always at the ready to mentor or to aid in any way he possibly could.

He leaves behind close friends, Mark Potter and Josh Nichols both of Rochester, and James Toepper of Brockport.  Several other dear friends also survive.

Capp is preceded in death by his sister, Lee Capp.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia, where Capp's funeral service and military honors will immediately follow calling hours at 4 p.m.  Private burial will be in Grand View Cemetery in Batavia. Rev. Jack A. Logan

BERGEN - Rev. Jack A. Logan, 93, of Bergen, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020, at his home in Bergen.

Rev. Logan was born on October 18, 1926, in St. Petersburg, Florida, a son of the late Jelks and Ann E. (Zuck) Logan.

Rev. Logan graduated from Harbor Creek High School, Roberts Wesleyan College and Asbury Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity Degree.   He was a pastor at the Bergen 1st Presbyterian Church in Bergen, New York and had served with the Free Methodist Church for 50 years.

He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving the USNAS Banana River, Fl.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Kathryn "Katie" (Greenawalt) Logan, whom he married on January 1, 1946; four children, Stephen (Donna) Logan of TN, Connie Logan of Conesus, Keith (Theresa) Logan of MI and Mark (Ruth) Logan of Churchville; 12 grandchildren: Jonathan (Candice) Logan; Jason Logan; Jamie (Wade) Humphries; Allison Nichols; Meredith (Stefan) Bauroth; Nichole (Lt. Col Matthew) Rapp; Melinda Jamis, Melissa Logan; DeWayne (Emily) Logan; Jordan Logan; Tyler (Rebecca) Logan and Elise (Shane) Fraser; 27 great-grandchildren;1 great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers, Herbert (late Sally) Logan of TX and Ronald (Donna) Logan of Ransomville.

He was a brother of the late Joyce Neithermer. 

Friends may call on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 2 to 5 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co., Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Street in Bergen.  Services will at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pearce Memorial Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili, NY with the Rev. James G. Cudney

Byron - James G. Cudney, age 77, died on Feb. 3, 2020 at Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Nov. 3, 1942 in Batavia, first son of Glenn W. Cudney and Mildred J. Newcomb.   He was predeceased by his parents and his youngest brother, Gerald W. Cudney of Florida.

He is survived by his wife, of 52 years, Barbara A. (Chapman) Cudney whom he married on June 17, 1967.  One brother, Kenneth G. (Barbara J.) Cudney of Florida; a sister-in-law, Nancy Cudney of Florida, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jim was a Switch Technician at Rochester Telephone Co. for 34 years and and also at Adelphia Communications in Buffalo for 5 years.   He was a Life Member of Genesee County Fish and Game Prot. Association, a Life member of Telephone Pioneers and Local 1170 CWA.   He served from 1964 until 1966 as a Sgt. in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam war.   His pastimes included hunting deer and fishing in Canada with his group of best buds.   In retirement he served his community as Councilman of Byron for 5 years and Chairman of the ZBA for 4 years.  He was involved with several committees in Byron.  He was a member of the Leroy Historical Society and enjoyed local history.

At his request there will be no calling hours.   A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring with burial in the North Byron Cemetery and a military honor guard.

Amy L. Huntzinger

Batavia - Amy L. Huntzinger (Netter), 62, of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 2, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John L. and Jamie R. Netter and her sister, Kathy Berra.

She is survived by her husband John Huntzinger, sons, Steven (Nicole) Huntzinger of Rome, New York and Robert (Melissa) Huntzinger of LeRoy New York; three grandchildren, Abraham and Grace Huntzinger and Josephine Huntzinger. She is also survived by her siblings, George (Cheryl) Netter, John (late Nadine) Netter, Sharon Kinney, Ginny Marble, Lorrie (Timothy) Storrs, Susan Ausman and as well as eleven nieces and nephews.

Amy graduated from Pembroke Central School and attended Genesee Community College. She volunteered at the Corfu Fire Department and was the first female firefighter in Genesee County. Additionally, she worked at Genesee Memorial Hospital for 17 years, beginning as a nurse's aide and subsequently becoming an EMT in the emergency room. She began working at H&R Block as a Tax Specialist and retired after 32 years. Amy enjoyed scrapbooking and spending time with her grandchildren. The kids were the loves of her life.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Jean M. Barnard

  Jean M. Barnard, 75, of Batavia passed away on Tuesday February 4, 2020 at the United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on July 16, 1944 in Batavia to the late William and Mary (Lambert) Pratt. In addition to her parents, Jean is predeceased by her husband; Charles D. Barnard Sr.; brother William Pratt and sister Margaret Westcott.

Jean worked for many years at the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia where she was a part of a great group of colleagues, which she thought of like family. She was a parishioner at St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia and a lifetime member at Godfreys Pond. Jean loved living in the country with her daughter and son in law, being outside and watching the animals and above all else spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   

She is survived by her children; Charles D. (Lisa Burns) Barnard Jr. and Kimberly (James) Ficarella of Batavia; sisters Marilyn (Don) Orlando Norse of FL., Mary Jo (George) Davis of Batavia; 2 grandchildren Samantha (Zach) Alwardt and Nicole (Shawn) Easton; 3 great-grandchildren Bryson, Brooklyn and Whitley, along with many nieces and nephews.

Leo L. Pelton

Leo L. Pelton, 100, of Attica passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the NYS VA Nursing Home in Batavia. Leo was born on December 1, 1919 in Erie PA, to the late Myron and Julia (Leonard) Pelton. He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline (Kohl) Pelton, his first wife Mary Rauber and their son Jonathan of Wayland NY; his siblings Agnes (Mike) Zak, Bertha (Clarence) Reiter, Allen Pelton and Hannah (Tom) Donahue

In his 100 years and 62 days upon this good earth, Leo always found a way to make himself useful. He kept busy his entire life. He is best known as a gentleman farmer and certainly knew his way around all his farm equipment and all the tools on his property. He often said, “It is better to wear out than to rust out.” He could be spotted driving his tractor on the family farm up until the snows arrived this past October. Leo could carry a tune and loved to sing Irish ballads and country songs. He is remembered for his quick wit and his cheerful laugh. Leo treasured humility and self-reliance. “Never think you are better than anyone else, but always think you are just as good.” He led a balanced life, and when the hard work was done, he encouraged everyone to “Take a break!” Leo graduated from Alexander Central High School in 1938. He was working second shift at the Batavia Metal Trades School in 1941 when he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Army in WWII, in the IV Division, 12th Infantry, Company A. He took part in 3 European battle campaigns including D Day and the Battle of the Bulge (Normandy, Ardennes and Rhineland). His military awards include the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-Africa-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Medal. Upon returning home, Leo held a factory job during the day and worked the family farm in the evenings and weekends. Over the years he worked at Cornell Aeronautical Labs in Buffalo, and Yale & Town and Doehler Jarvis in Batavia.

Leo is survived by his children Jerome (Sharon) of Texas, Sharon (John) of California, Daniel of Stafford, Charles (April) of Attica, Andrew (Debra) of Attica, Nicholas (Holly) of East Bethany and Myrna of Wayland; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 from 4 PM and 7 Pm at Marley Funeral Home, LLC 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM Friday, February 7, 2020 at Sts. Joachim & Anne Catholic Church, 50 East Avenue Attica, New York 14011. He will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Attica. Luncheon will follow internment.

Belva Ruth Calnan

On Wednesday, January 8, 2020, Belva Ruth Calnan, loving Mother and Sister, passed away in Jacksonville, FL at the age of 83. Belva was born on June 11, 1936 in Forty-Fort, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her son, Robert Calnan with whom she resided and was well taken care of, her sister; Donna Chamberlain of Albion, NY, her nieces; Melissa and Heather Chamberlain also of Albion, NY, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Belva graduated from Oakfield-Alabama Central School in 1954. Her career included working as a teacher for special needs children at BOCES which was the job she truly loved, and later as a caretaker for mentally challenged adults for ARC, both of which are in Batavia, NY. She also worked earlier as a secretary for Vanguard Abrasives in LeRoy, NY. Belva’s favorite activities were reading, bowling, bingo, playing games on her computer, and watching football. She was known for her warm smile and her kind and compassionate spirit.

Belva was preceded in death by her parents, John and Irene (Golden) Calnan, her Brother-In-Law John Chamberlain, as well as her beloved niece, Linda Michalak. 

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 8th, 2020 at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, where services will immediately follow visitation. Burial to follow at the Cary Cemetery, 21 Albert Street, Oakfield. A luncheon will follow graveside services at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 2 Main Street, Oakfield, NY.

Mr. Ernest Eugene Thomas

Bergen – Ernest Eugene Thomas, 76 years of age, of Bergen and Penn Yan passed away on January 31st, surrounded by his family. Ernest was the son of the late Ernest Lewis Thomas and the late Irene Delia Scofield Thomas of Penn Yan, New York.  He is survived by his  two sisters Virginia Wagner (the late Joseph Wagner) and Beverley Wells (Pete Wells), wife Sally Fodge Thomas of 49 years, his children Martha Otto (Samuel), Wendy Cheruiyot (Kennedy), Mark Thomas (Nicole), and grandchildren Elijah, Luke, and Kyle Otto; Isaac and Ileana Cheruiyot; Zachary Marshall and Connor and Brynn Thomas.

He was born in Penn Yan, New York.  He was known to his sisters as “Sonny” and was a beloved little brother to both Virginia and Beverley.  As a high school graduate, Ernest joined the United States Air Force, where he served his country as a bomber mechanic. After his years in the service, he started as a mold maker, first at Nylamold and then 21 years at Kodak. 

On April 24, 1971, Ernest married Sally Frances Fodge.  Together, they had 2 beautiful girls; Martha Lynne Thomas and Wendy Annette Thomas; later Ernest and Sally adopted Mark Jae Thomas from Seoul, South Korea.  Family was one of the most important things to Ernest, and he dedicated his life to providing for and raising his three children and being a loving husband to Sally.  He found a way to connect to each of his grandkids, and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them.

Ernie traveled in his later years with the Gilliam Grant Community Center, loved playing Sudoku and had a passion for trains. He was an avid gardener and had a green thumb.  He loved to grow different types of vegetables each year, even dabbling in growing Carolina Reaper peppers (something his life-long friend Mike introduced him to).  Ernie was defined by a life of hard work, honesty, and being an all-around genuine person.  Ernest was able to have a conversation with anyone at any time, especially at family gatherings which happened several times a year.  He loved to spend time with his 8 grandchildren, and he enjoyed watching the trains pass by his house in Bergen (he and his wife purposefully built their house facing the railroad tracks pointed towards the west to see the sun set every evening).  He was always there to help when needed and he was a fighter right until the end.

Calling Hours will be at H.E. Turner Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Avenue, Bergen on Monday, February 3 from 4-7pm.  Funeral Services will be held at the Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 38 South Lake Avenue at 11 am on Tuesday, February 4. Burial, with military honors will follow in Mount Rest Cemetery. Flowers are graciously accepted. David Carlton Lapp

LeRoy - David Carlton Lapp, 58, of LeRoy, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at his home.

David was born February 28, 1961, in Batavia, a  son of Joan (Wood) Lapp of Batavia and the late Carlton Lapp.

David enjoyed fishing and bike riding.

Surviving along with his mother, Joan, include his children, Stephanie Lapp of Lyndonville, Matthew Lapp of Batavia and Andrea (Patrick) Smith of Batavia; a  granddaughter, Emma Sponaugle of Lyndonville; a brother, Donald Lapp of Indiana; two sisters, Sandra Johnson of Batavia and Ann Clark of Albion and several nieces and nephews. 

David is a brother of the late Douglas Lapp.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia.  At the request of the Lapp family there will be no funeral service.

JASON M. GIULIANI

JASON M. GIULIANI ~ Age 41, of Batavia, NY died unexpectedly Thursday January 30, 2020. He was born in Batavia, NY on November 5, 1978 to Sandra Duggan and Alexander E. Giuliani both of Batavia.

Jason was a Quality Control Tech at Chapin Manufacturing in Batavia. He loved his sports especially golf, football and basketball, he enjoyed video games and playing poker. Jason was an outgoing, lovable young man who loved his family and “Mom’s Sauce” on Sundays.

Surviving is his mother, Sandra (Gary) Pangrazio of Batavia, his father, Alex (Tammy) Giuliani of Batavia, fiancé, Amber Wallace of Batavia, children, Gina of Batavia, Jason, Jr. and Christopher both of FL, Jurnee of Batavia, step-children, Kamari Wallace and Breeah Avery both of Batavia, siblings, Jennifer, Jessica and Jackie Giuliani all of Batavia, maternal grandmother, Irma Martin of Batavia, paternal grandparents, Alex (Barbara) Giuliani of FL, mother-in-law, Kelli Wallace of Batavia along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Isaac M. Styer "Ike"

Isaac M. Styer “Ike”, 40 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (January 29, 2020) after a courageous and faithful battle with cancer

He was born September 10, 1979, in Batavia, NY, a son of James and Margaret Overfield Styer.

Ike was a loving, devoted husband and father who, by example, led his family trusting in the Lord. Anyone who knew Ike was inspired by his humble and genuine disposition. He was a lineman for Asplundh Tree Company and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Batavia. His involvement with his church was very important to him, especially being part of “Joshua’s Men” and the Grace Warriors children's ministry. He was a member of the 1997 graduating class of LeRoy High School, where he played on the 1995 NYS State Champion Football Team. He was also a loyal Buffalo Bills and Phillies fan.

Surviving besides his parents, is his beloved wife, Jennifer Macklem Styer of Batavia. Cherished children, Chastin Styer and Hailey Styer. Sisters, Judy (Lou) Kalogirou, Kathy (Ouajih) Allam, Peggy (Ron) Paladino, Linda Styer and brother Tom Styer. Also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.

Patricia L. Dzienciol "Trish"

Patricia L. Dzienciol “Trish”, 50 of Akron, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday (January 28, 2020) from injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

She was born July 28, 1969 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late David E. Smith and Renate M. Fleckenstein Smith of Port Richey, Fl.

Trish was employed as a healthcare aide for the NYS School For The Blind in Batavia. She loved spending time with her family and friends, camping, fishing and traveling to various garage sales.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Dzienciol of Akron, NY. Stepson, JR Wright of Attica, NY. Stepdaughters, Danielle Dzienciol and Nicole Dzienciol, both of Vernon, CT. Grandchildren, Michael and Cristhian. Siblings, Tina (Greg) Sporer of Gainsville, FL, Dennis (Patricia) Smith of Akron, NY, Vicky (Erik) Minler of Albion, NY and Aaron (Tabitha) Smith of New Port Richey, FL. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Leora Zillman Reinhart

Pavilion - Leora Zillman Reinhart, born in Batavia on February 9, 1919, longtime resident of Pavilion, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the age of 100.

She was the widow of Paul F. Reinhart, Sr. of Pavilion who passed away on August 27, 1977. They were married in 1941. She is survived by her sister, Alice Chapin of Atlanta, Georgia and is preceded in death by her sister, Shirley (Harold) Kingdon of Stafford. She is also survived by three sons, Paul F. (Emily) Reinhart, Jr., Ronald Reinhart of Rochester and Gregory Reinhart of Paris, France and several nieces and nephews.

She was known and remembered by many while employed as the medical secretary and assistant to Dr. Walter Heuman in Pavilion for 17 years and to Dr. Julius Katzenstein in Batavia for 11 years. Before entering the Village Green in LeRoy, she resided for 20 years at Washington Towers in Batavia. Preceding that she maintained the family home for 50 years in Pavilion since 1946. She was active in St. Mary's Church in Pavilion with The Ladies of Charity, before joining Resurrection Parish in Batavia.

Her love of music brought the lifelong pleasure, which she passed onto her sons. Her knitting, needlepoint and crochet work were greatly appreciated. She cultivated garden flowers of every type and was well-known for her talent as a baker of pies and cakes. As long as the late bit of her eyesight permitted, she read the Bible daily.

Her happy life was brimming with memories of loving grandparents on Alexander Road in Batavia, where she was born while her father served overseas during World War I. She told inspiring stories of working and struggling during the Great Depression, of music with friends and family at home around the piano, watching her parents house burn to the ground in Oakfield and the sacrifices of World War II.

She loved animals and enjoyed watching wild birds at the feeder. She always had a dog as a companion and even raised two goslings to adulthood. They would follow her every step.

She traveled every year with Paul to points such as St. Anne's Cathedral at Trois Rivieres, Montreal and to her beloved lakes in the Adirondacks. Especially after retiring, her life was punctuated with travel to San Francisco, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston and Paris, France. He 100th birthday was celebrated surrounded with friends and family.

The sweet, fun loving nature she freely shared taught many to bear with pain and loss as she did so bravely at the end of her life. All who met her remember her gentleness and patience to the very end.

Per her request, there will be no calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 3rd at 10 a.m. at Mary Immaculate Parish, St. Mary's Site, 11095 St. Mary's Street, Pavilion. Private burial will be in Oatka Cemetery.  Charitable donations may be given in her name to Linwood Gardens, 1912 York Road West, Linwood, New York 14486. Phyllis B. Fauth

Corfu - Phyllis B. Fauth, 91, of Corfu, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the LeRoy Village Green.

Phyllis was born was on July 14, 1928 in Corfu, a daughter of the late Albert and Hazel Beach Herman. She was the wife of the late Clifford A. Fauth, mother of the late Russell D. Fauth and sister of the late Ruth Lennon Case.

Phyllis was a member of the Corfu United Presbyterian Church for over 77 years and the church secretary for over 35 years.
She was a member of the Genesee Country Button Club and longtime member of the Corfu Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Phyllis was a devoted Yankees fan and was happiest just spending time with her family.

Surviving are her children; Hazel (Charles) Barber, Bruce (Mary) Fauth, Phil (Lyn) Fauth and Jeff (Donna) Fauth; 9 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; her brother, Charles A. (Patricia) Herman and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call Friday, January 31st from 4 to 8 p.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 East Main Street Corfu. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1st at 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Jacob A. Lang

Jacob A. Lang, 36 of Batavia, passed away on January 28, 2020. He was born in Buffalo on October 5, 1983 to Ricky G. (Niki S. Tundo) Lang of Batavia. He is preceded in death by his twin brother Jason D. Lang.   

Jacob had a duel Master’s Degree in Sociology and History. He was dedicated to his work, extremely passionate about teaching and worked as a college professor for many years. Jacob was an avid outdoorsman that loved to hunt and fish.

Jacob is survived by his parents, sister Brandi M. Smith of Buffalo, grandmother Marie Tundo, grandfather Nick Tundo both of Batavia, along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Monday, February 3, 2020 from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Prayers will be recited 9:00 AM on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the Funeral Home, followed by a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish, 18 Ellicott St., Batavia, New York 14020. He will be laid rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.
