L. Howard Petre

L. Howard Petre, of Varysburg, passed away on November 17, 2018 at the tender age of 96. He was born in Orchard Park, NY to the late Albert and the late Gertrude Petre.

Howard owned and operated Varysburg Agway and Embt Maple for many years. He is past Fire Chief of the Varysburg Fire Department and was caretaker of Varysburg Cemetery. Howard spent over 65 years with the love of his life, Jean. He was a member of the St. Joachim & Anne Church.

Howard was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Gertrude; sister, Joanne; brothers, George, Ray, Albert, and Richard.

He is survived by his loving wife Jean (Embt) Petre of Varysburg; children, Michael (Lynette) Petre, Mark (Barb) Petre, and Brian (Cheryl) Petre; his sister, Mary Lou Petre; eight grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

There will be no prior visitation. Services will be at a later date.

Mary Leigh Janes

Mary Leigh Janes, 71, of Attica, crossed over on November 17, 2018. Mary Leigh was born February 20, 1947 in Gowanda, NY to the late Emil and the late Marilyn (Reed) Johnson.

Mary Leigh was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed social outings with her family and friends. She was a very thoughtful and selfless person and her contagious smile filled the room. Mary Leigh loved animals, especially her cat, Tigger, who has been loved for 22 years by Mary Leigh.

Mary Leigh is survived by her loving husband, Ralph; children, Michele, Suzie (Marc), David and Michael; and granddaughter, Alyssa.

She has been reunited with her parents, Emil and Marilyn; her sister, Janet McClain; and her brother, Emil Johnson, Jr.

There will be no prior visitation. A Celebration of Mary Leigh’s life will be held at 11:00AM. on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. A luncheon will follow.

Elizabeth M. Allenbrandt

Elizabeth M. Allenbrandt, 90 of York, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday (November 16, 2018) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

She was born August 21, 1928 in Friendship, NY, a daughter of the late Forest and Elna (Van Horn) Sprague.

Elizabeth was a homemaker prior to her employment as an inspector with Champion Products in Geneseo, NY. She was an avid reader, animal lover and supported local animal shelters.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Allenbrandt who died March 8, 2017. Sisters and brothers, Gen Fuller, Jean Ellis, Christine Wright, Helen Crabb, Richard Sprague, William Sprague and Dorothy Saxton.

Survivors include her son, Terry (Carmen) Allenbrandt of Penfield. Daughter, Cynthia Allenbrandt of Rochester. Sisters, Audrey (Vern) Mason, Mary Williams and Rosalie Beroff. Sister in-law, Glenda Sprague and Anna May Allenbrandt. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Machias, NY.

Penny Louise Bridge

Penny Louise Bridge, 68, of Elba, a co-owner of Dan Bridge Farms in Elba, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at her home under the care of her family and Homecare & Hospice.

Mrs. Bridge was born August 4, 1950 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late John M. and Brenda (Dorf) Carver. 

Penny was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel J. Bridge of Elba, whom she married on September 25, 1970; two sons, Jason (Christie) Bridge of Corfu and Jeffrey (Melissia "Missy") Bridge of Elba; four grandchildren, Jayden Bridge of Corfu and Danica Bridge, Sophia Bridge and Savanna Bridge, all of Elba; two brothers, John N. (Nancy) Carver of Albany and Shane (Mary) Carver of Stafford and two nieces. 

A celebration of Penny’s life will be held on Sunday, November 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Elba Fireman’s Recreation Hall, 7143 Oak Orchard Road, Elba.  Family and friends are invited.

Jeanette P. Jazwiecki

Jeanette P. Jazwiecki, 75 of Akron, passed away peacefully on Thursday (November 15, 2018) at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 18, 1943 in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of the late Richard and Florence Dziadaszek Hudomint.

Jeanette was employed by Wilson Greatbatch prior to her retirement. She enjoyed attending craft shows, camping, playing with puzzles and dominos. She also enjoyed trips to the lake cottage with her sister. Most of all she loved her family and was a wonderful mother to her children and grandmother to her grandkids. She will be deeply missed by all who knew of her kind heart.

She was the wife of the late Jerome E. Jazwiecki who died November 13, 2012; grandmother of the late Angela Jazwiecki and sister of the late Patricia Maxwell, Richard Hudomint and Michael Hudomint.

Survivors include her children, James (Jennifer) Jazwiecki of Akron and Dawn (Mark) Smith of Lancaster. Grandchildren, Robert Jazwiecki, Brock Smith, Camden Smith, Emily Jazwiecki and Grace Jazwiecki. Sister, Joan (late Gene) Dziekan of Akron and Chris (late Frank) Voll of Akron. Bothers, Robert (Sandra) Hudomint and Dennis (Eunice) Hudomint, both of Akron.  Aunt, Arlene Gburek of East Amherst. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Mark L. Volpe

  Mark L. Volpe, 68, of Batavia, a loving husband and father, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Toronto, Canada on January 14, 1950 to the late Rocco and Mary (Pascucci) Volpe.

Mark spent over 30 years working for Chapin Manufacturing in Batavia. He prided himself on a strong work ethic. Some of Mark’s passions were photography, nature, history, hunting, reading, cooking, gardening and most importantly spending time with his family over a home cooked meal. Mark spent 48 years with the love of his life, Louise.

He is survived by his loving wife; Louise (Seppe) Volpe of Batavia; children Nicholas Volpe of Batavia, Mark (Heather) Volpe of Elba, Melissa Miller of Batavia and Theresa (Ted) Lazik of Batavia; sister Rae (James “Daniel”) Snyder of Alexander and brother, John (Mary) Volpe of Attica; 7 grandchildren Amanda, Rachael, Elizabeth, Sarah, Isaac, Lena and Anthony; 2 great-grandchildren Myla and Elle, along with several nieces and nephews.

Richard C. Hoak

  Richard C. Hoak, 64, of Batavia passed away on November 14, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on March 18, 1954 in Batavia to the late Charles and Marjorie (VanValkenburg) Hoak.

Richard was a self-employed businessman in Batavia for many years. He was an avid collector of many things. He was huge amusement park enthusiast with a love for rollercoasters. Richard will be forever remembered as a loving father and grandfather who always cared for others.

He is survived by his daughter; Sylvia (Jon) Smith of Batavia; 3 grandchildren Tapanga (Joel Jackowski) Wheaton, Kurstin Smith and Jon Smith Jr.

Lura Jean Hersee

Lura Jean Hersee, 71, of Corfu, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Lura Jean was born December 5, 1946 in Batavia, daughter of the late Noble W. and Margaret Wieben Baker. She was the sister of the late Robert Baker.

Lura Jean owned and operated Lura Jean’s School of Dance in Corfu for 35 years. While running the dance studio, she went to work for Monroe Tractor, retiring after 15 years. Lura Jean loved sewing and crafting and spending time with her family. Between teaching her students how to dance and her work at Monroe Tractor, her greatest joy was being a faithful partner to her husband Glenn on the farm. 

Lura Jean is survived by her husband of 52 years, Glenn M. Hersee; daughters, Kathy (Brad) Winspear and Doreen (Kurt) Schenk; grandchildren, Adele, Jeffery, Lucas, Marygrace, Maggie, Kurtis, Evan and Mack. She is also survived by her niece, Christine and nephew, Bob.

Family and friends may call Sunday, November 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 East Main Street, Corfu. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4809 South Newstead Road, Akron. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, South Newstead. 

Kristie L. Stack

Kristie L. Stack, 35, of Bergen passed away on Tuesday November 13, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born in Batavia on March 11, 1983 to the late Wayne Worden and Michele (Fleming) Worden of Bergen.

Kristie was employed at Tops Market in Batavia.

She is survived by her husband; Paul Stack Jr. of Bergen; children Trent Stack LeRoy and Tatym Stack of Oakfield; siblings Corey Worden of Bergen, Kevin (Jamie) Worden of Byron and Kyle Worden of Rochester, along with several nieces and nephews.

JEANNIE M. GODLOVE

JEANNIE M. GODLOVE ~ Age 54, of Batavia, died peacefully Monday November 5, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born in Batavia, NY on March 24, 1964 to James Fryer and Jeanette Marchese both of Batavia.

Jeannie was a longtime employee of the P.W. Minor Co and was published as a part of the finishing team. She loved spending time with family and was always one to put others first. In her spare time, she loved gardening, visiting garage sales, sewing, crocheting, cooking and bowling.

Jeannie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randy Godlove on February 9, 2018; she leaves to cherish her memories; daughter, Samantha and son, Gator, both of Batavia; sisters, Annette Mazur, Anna Marie “Mia” (Michael Corona) Mogavero and Tammy Stevens all of Batavia; lifelong family friend, Alan Stevens; mother-in-law, Joyce (Stringham) Godlove along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

John L. "Jack" Carney

LeRoy / Pavilion ~ John L. "Jack" Carney, age 23, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday (November 10, 2018). 

    

He was born January 26, 1995 in Batavia, a son of Donald Carney and Mary Lynn Starr Cowell.

     Jack was a very kind and loving person, who enjoyed being with family and friends.  He had a hard work ethic and loved his job.  He enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling, baseball and soccer, however, hunting was one of his passions.  At age 14, Jack was able to get his first buck and set a New York State record.

     He will be sadly missed by his parents, Donald and Mary; his siblings, Elizabeth (RJ) Mills, Ashley (Dave) Clark, Christine (Adam Zuch) Cowell, Stefanie Carney, Rebecca Cowell and Joseph Carney; girlfriend, Morgan DeWitt; paternal grandmother, Laura Mae Carney; maternal grandmother, Deborah Starr; maternal great-grandmother, Betty Wellman, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

     He was predeceased by his grandfathers, John Carney and James Starr.

Donald C. Sage

Donald C. Sage, age 78, of Alabama, died Monday, November 12, 2018 in Palliative Care at  Strong Memorial Hospital  in Rochester. He was surrounded by his loving family.  Donald was born October 12, 1940 in Batavia, a son of the late Carl and Beatrice (Grady) Sage.  He married Janet I. (Sumeriski) Sage on September 24, 1960. 

 

He was employed by Carpenter's Union Local 280, Niagara Falls, as a Union Carpenter and retired from Iroquois Job Corp as a trainer in a program for disadvantaged youth.  As a union carpenter, he taught them carpentry as a trade. 

 

 

He was a member of the Oakfield Alabama Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee.  He was a 57 year member of the Alabama Fire Department where he served as a Past Chief, line officer and member of the board of directors.  He was a current member of the Alabama Planning Board, was an avid LA Dodgers fan, Buffalo Bills fan and had a passion for trapping and playing Euchre. 

 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet I. (Sumeriski) Sage; a daughter, Christine (Michael) Schultz of Oakfield; 2 sons, Brian (Christine) Sage and Jeffrey Sage, both also of Oakfield.

His pride and joy was spending time with his 9 grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian Jr. (Karla), Danielle (Jason), Evan, Katie (Jake), Melissa, Emily, and his favorite twins, Ryan and Kyle; his 2 great-grandchildren, Landon and Harper; his sister, Wanda (Ronald) Gilbert and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

 

He was the brother of the late Eugene Sage, William Sage and uncle of the late Daniel Gilbert.

Louside M. Versch

Louise Marie Buddell Versch, 84, of Corfu, passed away Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Weinburg Campus in Getzville, surrounded by her family.

Louise was born on June 30, 1934 in Buffalo, NY. She graduated from Kenmore West High School. Louise lived in Corfu for 55 years and was a member of the Corfu United Presbyterian Church. She loved playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening, painting and selling pumpkins, bowling, baking, playing piano, and working at the church food pantry.

Wife to the late Joseph P. Versch. Survived by daughters: Kathy (Patrick) Versch Gallaway, Becky (Doug) Versch Hartwell, Amy (Thomas) Versch Metz.  Grandchildren: Jason Meyer, Sara Meyer Johnson, James Morford, Adam Gallaway, Megan (Cory) Gallaway Lauth, Collin Gallaway, Morgan Hartwell, Maddison Metz and Olivia Metz. Sisters: Lorna Buddell Fearon, Gye Buddell, Joyce Buddell. Nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Three step children: Bonnie (Herb) Patterson Cross, Steve (Mary) Patterson, Greg Patterson and their families.  

Calling hours will be at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 East Main Street, Corfu, NY on Thursday, November 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Corfu United Presbyterian Church, 63 Allegheny Street, Corfu at 10:30 on Friday, November 16 with burial at Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Rita V. Carmichael

LeRoy ~  Rita (Van Alst) Carmichael, age 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening (November 7, 2018) at Orchard Manor in Medina.

     

Born on October 14, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harry Van Alst and   Anna Bertha (Criger) Van Alst Morrison.

     Rita was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, William George Carmichael, who passed away on July 12, 2018. Rita was a 1941 graduate of Le Roy High School. She went to work at Lapp Insulator during World War II as a result of departing soldiers created a shortage of manpower to staff the manufacturing plant. She later worked at the Le Roy Hardware for several years. Rita was a longtime Buffalo Bills fan and a faithful follower of the Syracuse Orange basketball team.

     Rita is survived by her daughters, Carol (Katie) (late Ronald) Engert and Christine (Richard Farnsworth) McQuillen; grandchildren, Rhonda (Dave) Schmeer, Rebecca (Doug) Thompson, Rachel (Rich) Lombard, Stephanie (Jamie) Call, Stephen (Mack) (Elizabeth) McQuillen and Gregory (Tina) McQuillen; twenty-one great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her sisters, Regina (Pete) Steen and Dorothy (late Abe) Machols.  Rita was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jane (late Fred) Grasby.

     Rita will be laid to rest, along with George, at the Western New York National Veteran’s Cemetery in Pembroke, N.Y. upon its completion.

Cynthia L. Kiersz

Cynthia L. Kiersz, 68 of Southport, NC and formerly of Batavia, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday (October 25, 2018) in North Carolina.

She was born July 7, 1950 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Stanley and Sophia Cichocki Adamczyk.

After graduating Notre Dame High School, she married Kevin Kiersz and they started a family in Batavia NY. In the mid 1980’s they relocated to Ellicottville NY continued to raise their children and after retirement moved to Southport N.C. Cindy spent her lifetime committed to her husband Kevin,3 children, 6 grandchildren, family, friends, and the catholic church. She always put her family first and was there to listen and give advice in her own considerate, warm and loving way. She is well loved and will be missed by everyone that she touched.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Kiersz of North Carolina. Children, Steven (Jennifer) Kiersz of North Carolina, Tina (David) Forthman of Salamanca and Erica (Mark) Mansmith of North Carolina. Sister, Kathleen Heywood of Batavia. Also survived by six grandchildren.

Family and friends are cordially invited to share in her Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday (November 17th), 9:30am at Resurrection Parish, 18 Ellicott St., Batavia, NY.
