Obituaries

Robert (Bob) J. Wiedrich, 86, of Jamestown, formerly of Batavia, Passed away peacefully on June 18^th, 2016.  Born the eldest son to the late Chester and Ernestine Wiedrich of Oakfield on March 7, 1930.  He wed Mary H. Votry on April 16^th, 1955.  Robert and Mary were inseparable for 59 years until Mary’s death on October 10, 2014.  He is also predeceased by brothers Gerald and Donald, a sister Shirley (Irving) Brumber; brothers-in-law Anthony Annunziata and Robert Votry. 

 Robert is survived by 2 sisters, Ruth (Joseph) Defazio of Syracuse and Elsie Annunziata of Lancaster, his children Diana (Douglas) German of Batavia, Scott Wiedrich of Jamestown, Lori Ingels of Chandler, AZ, sister in-law Lucille Votry,  grandchildren Christopher Dawson of Chandler, AZ and Timothy German of Buffalo, sister-in-law Nancy Wiedrich along with several nieces and nephews.   

 Robert was employed by Carborundum and AMAX Specialty Metals in Akron and Graham Manufacturing in Batavia until his retirement. He also served in the US Army National Guard during the Korean conflict and was an organ and tissue donor. Bob enjoyed playing golf, boating and sailing, spending time with his wife Mary at the casino and very difficult puzzles and games.  His gentle smile and genuine personality will be missed by everyone.

Dolores T. Yourkowski, 86 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (June 14, 2016) at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

She was born August 8, 1929 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Stanley and Marion Giaujowski Twardowski.

Dolores along with her late husband were the former owners of the Pine Grove Inn. She also worked in the bakery of the former Jubilee Market in Batavia. She enjoyed socializing with friends, family and visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dolores also enjoyed visiting the casino's of Las Vegas when she had lived there and visiting friends on various lakes in the area. She was a member of the Glenn S. Loomis American Legion, Veness-Strollo VFW and the Polish Falcons.

She was the wife of the late George Yourkowski who passed away October 30, 1994 and mother of the late Marcia Anne Belli who passed away January 15, 2015. Dolores was also a sister of the late Genevieve Sobolewski, Ida Sobolewski, Tillie Jakubowski, Rosalyn Moscicki, Eleanor Matlasz, Frank Twardowski and Stanley Twardowski Jr.

Survivors include her son Gregory Yourkowski of Las Vegas, NV. Grandchildren, Georganne Lang of Batavia, J. Jason Mott of Vermont, Bridgette Yourkowski of Batavia and Travis Yourkowski of Batavia. She also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

East Bethany ~ Alfred H. "Buz" Smith Jr., age 65, of Little Canada Road, passed away Thursday evening (June 16, 2016) at home in the loving presence of his family.

    

 He was born March 6, 1951 in Springville, N.Y., a son of the late Alfred and Florence Wieder Smith.

     Buz will be remembered as a very quiet and generous man, who was totally devoted to his family.  He enjoyed working around his home and yard with his loving wife, Linda.  In addition to being a wonderful husband and father, he was extremely proud of being a terrific grandfather to his two granddaughters, who were the love of his life.

     He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Linda Mannix Smith; his sons, Jon (Ann) Smith of E. Bethany and David Smith of Pavilion; granddaughters, Rebecca and Addison; siblings, Nancy Sprissler of Albany, Carol (John) Fritton of Oswego, Jeanne Boden of Albany, Warren (Janet) Smith of Newark Valley, Carl (Carol) Smith of AZ and Bruce (Amy) Smith of NH, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Batavia - Elizabeth M. Covey, 98, of Batavia, formerly of Oakfield, passed away Wednesday, (June 15, 2016) at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Facility, in LeRoy.

Mrs. Covey was born March 30, 1918 in Moriah, a daughter of the late Guy and Sarah (O'Neil) Wright.

Elizabeth was an avid reader and Yankees fan.  She also loved nature a working crossword puzzles.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was the wife of the late James Covey, who passed away in 1985.

Surviving are her children, Larry (Paula) Covey of Batavia, Michael (Meegon) Covey of Oxnard, CA, Judy (Joseph) Figliulo of St. Augustine, FL, Susan (Gary) Call of Stafford, Patricia (Robert) Bak of Batavia;  brothers, John (Andrea) Wright and Bill Wright both of Moriah; sisters, Mary (late Bill) Daha of Moriah, and Beulah (late Willard) Magoon of VT.  Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Lang; brothers, Guy and Bob; sisters, Alice, Gertrude, Marguerite, and Thelma.

There will be no prior visitation.  Family and Friends are invited to attend Elizabeth’s Funeral Service on Saturday at 11 AM at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3500 Winton Place #4, Rochester, NY 14623-2860.  Burial will be in Cary Cemetery, Oakfield.

Batavia – Miss Esther Thom, of Batavia, a secretary at Monroe Palburn, Inc. in West Seneca prior to her retirement, died Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Facility.

Miss Thom was born in Batavia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Eva (Werner) Thom.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Batavia and a 1934 Graduate of Batavia High School.

She is survived by her niece, Jackie Digons of Mattituck; 3 great-nephews, Peter Digons of Charlotte, NC, Eric Digons of North Easton, MA and Luke Digons of Brookline, MA and 1 great-niece, Leigh Digons of NY, NY. 

She was the sister of the late Joseph Thom, Edward Thom, Margaret Thom, Cecelia Wasnick, Theresa Thom and Florence Thom.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at H.E. Paul R. Janes, 78, of Attica passed away on Tuesday June 14, 2016 at the Garden View Senior Center in LeRoy surrounded by his family and caregivers.  He was born on October 27, 1937 in Warsaw to the late Ralph and Lois (Standish) Janes. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary (Kirby) Janes.

Paul attended Canisius College prior to getting married to Mary Kirby on June 10, 1961. He was a member of the United States Army Reserves from 1960-1965 and also belonged to Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish in Attica. Paul was a Civil Engineer for 45 years with the New York State Dept. of Transportation and various consulting firms. He was an avid Yankees fan, a Civil War Historian and collector.

Paul is survived by his children; Mark (Cynthia) Janes of Batavia; Michael (Tricia) Janes of Attica; Mary Beth (Keith) Kibler of Attica; Paul Jr. (Kristin) Janes of Attica; Dr. Peter (Margaret) Janes of Cowlesville; siblings Richard “Louie” (Rosie) Janes of Attica; Ralph “Buzz” (Mary Leigh) Janes of Attica; Sharon (Donald) Williams of Texas; Stephen (Carrie) Janes of Batavia; grandchildren Nadyne (Timothy) McNutt, Sophia, Pierson, Edward, Jack, Briana, Norah, Gabrielle, Henry, Meredith, Natalie and Wesley Janes, Grace, Jacqueline and Elizabeth Kibler and his first great grandchild that is expected in November.

  Marilyn M. Henning, 77, of Stafford passed away on Tuesday June 14, 2016 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.  She was born in Perry, NY to the late Carl and Mae (Peet) Earl. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Leland “Lee” W. Henning; brother Raymond Earl; sister Carol Adams and Sue Delplato; mother and father in law Verna and George Henning; brothers in law Edward, George and Robert Henning, Joseph Mogenhan

Marilyn worked for many years at the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia.  She was a homemaker, loved gardening, animals and most of all being with her family.

She is survived by her children; Brett Henning of Stafford, Wendy (Dennis) Snell of Alabama, NY, Kim Henning of Stafford; sister Jacqueline Duckworth of Batavia and brother Christopher Earl of Batavia; her two grandchildren Aidan and Maria Snell; in-laws Lewis (Carrie) Henning, Arlene Henning, Joan (Don) Tullar, Linda (Glenn) Northrup, Betty Mogenhan and Shirlene Edwards, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mallory Ryan McDanel was born with angel wings.  She did not receive them on June 13^th 2016 upon her passing; Mallory was a congenital messenger from God. What defines brief? Often, it is said of a novel man or woman that their life spent on this earth was brief, comparing it to the history of life as we know it and eternity after that.  So what would one say about Mallory’s 15 weeks and 6 days?

Pithy, terse, an aphorism. “One Love.” Mallory’s impact lives in the lessons she allowed those who knew her, if only through a computer screen, to auto-didactically process. These lessons are uniquely individualized by everyone, but stem from the purest form of life; the quintessential, non-conventional wisdom of love.

As a symbol of love, an icon of hope, and a denotation of faith, she broke down the fear of our own broken hearts.  She invited people to feel.  Compassion, Empathy, Admiration, Joy, Passion, Acceptance, Blessedness, Sympathy, Freedom, Peace; Mallory allowed all who knew her story to explore emotion rooted in love.  All from a hospital bed in Strong Memorial Hospital. The ripple effect started as she dropped into the giant pond of life and moved outward from her parents. The momentum transformed ripples into waves through the dedicated nurses and doctors who cared for her, who instantly saw a peculiar baby girl. It was at this point that it was unstoppable within her grandparents, relatives and family, and broadcasted in mainstream media. It will always be unclear to how many lives Mallory touched.

Born to Ryan Douglas McDanel and Kimmie Hill McDanel of Orchard Street in Perry, NY on February 23^rd, 2016, Mallory Ryan McDanel started her journey with a congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. She came into this world with a single ventricle (half of a heart), but grew all of the hearts she touched ten-fold. Her legacy will remain in those hearts with a new zeal to treat every day as a blessing. Her pose of contentedness will serve as a reminder to our own humanness that God’s power is made perfect in weakness. Her smile defeated fear. Her life will be remembered with a message: One Love.

Mallory passed in peace in the arms of her earthy mother and father.  In Jubilation, one could confirm that life is not measured by the amount of breaths one takes, but by the moments that one’s breath is taken away. Her utopia was not what onlookers would consider bliss, but the quantity and quality of love for her was nothing short of a miracle.  She continues to make us all think differently about life and experiential, unconditional love. Her message brought unity by breaking down walls of certainty and created a critical environment to think and feel. Her innocence and her dignity in death will create a place for new life and one love for us all.

She is survived by her loving parents, Ryan and Kimmie McDanel; paternal grandparents Doug and Jackie McDanel; paternal great grandparent Ann McDanel; maternal grandparents Larry and Karlene Hill; paternal uncle and aunt James and Megan Samaniego; paternal cousin Sage Samaniego; paternal aunt Caitlin McDanel; maternal uncle and aunt Josh and Kristin Campbell; maternal cousins Elizabeth and Clayton Campbell.

GERALD P. MILLEN

Age 81, of Elba, died peacefully Monday June 13, 2016 at Rochester General Hospital. He was born June 22, 1934 in Detroit, MI, a son of the late Rudolph and Clarice (Bondy) Millen; also preceded in death by siblings, Catherine, Mary Ann, Raymond, Francis, Helen, Thomas and Rudolph Millen, Bernice Blinke-Hanlin and  Ruth Blinke. 

Mr. Millen is a United States Air Force Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict and a member of St. Padre Pio Parish in Elba. He worked many years for the federal government as a Quality Assurance Specialist, he was an avid golfer and was a "Member" of the "Coffee Club" at Monachino's Garage in Elba. 

Surviving is his beloved wife of 42 years, Sandra (Myers) Millen of Elba, son, William (Sarah) Millen of Batavia and their children, Samantha & Ryan; son, Mike (Mona) Millen of WI and their children, Karly, Reid & Hollie; daughter, Terry (Jeannie) Millen of WI; brother, Lawrence (Edie) Millen; sister, Clarice Kovala all of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Estelle Sniatkowski and Isabelle Millen both of FL along with many nieces and nephews. 

The family will be present from 4 - 8PM on Friday June 17 at the MICHAEL S. ROGER O. ANDERSON

Age 81, of Batavia, died Tuesday June 14, 2016 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1935 in Middlebury, NY and preceded in death by his sister, Betty Amato.

Mr. Anderson worked for many years as a long haul truck driver. He had a love for Harley Davidson Motorcycles, was an avid bowler, enjoyed camping and truly enjoyed his work as a truck driver.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 25 years, Irene (Oakes) Anderson of Batavia; children, Timothy Anderson of Batavia, Dawn Brinson of Bergen, Vicki Berry of Batavia; step-children, Bernadette (Doug) Smart of Batavia, Sue (Greg) Okussick of GA, Linda (Dennis) Kupka of Albion and Tom (Dani) King of Oakfield; sister, Sue (Ron) Poorman of Waterloo; grandchildren Brandon & Tyler Smart along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and four legged friends, Ginger and Lucky Charm.

LENA M. FIANNACA

Age 91, of Batavia, died peacefully Monday morning June 13, 2016 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born July 24, 1924 in Oakfield, NY a daughter of the late Samuel and Josephine (Cina) Pilato, she was preceded in death by beloved husband of 67 years, Salvatore Fiannaca on September 12, 2013. 

Mrs. Fiannaca was retired from NY Telephone where she worked as an operator and repair clerk for 35 years and was an active member and volunteer with the Telephone Pioneers. She was an avid gardener, bowler, sports fan, especially the New York Yankees and a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. Mrs. Fiannaca and her husband spent several years in Scottdale, AZ when they retired and enjoyed travelling the US and abroad. 

Surviving is her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Joe (Rosemary) Fiannaca of Batavia and their children, Joseph (Kristin) Fiannaca of Rochester, Gregory Fiannaca of Batavia and Melissa (AJ) Kasmarek of Stafford; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kathryn & Samantha Fiannaca, Jacob, Kelsey & Andrew Kasmarek; sisters, Frances Pilato and Fee McDermott both of Scottsdale, AZ and Jennie Bianconi of TN, brother-in-law, Jack (Jean) Fiannaca of Rochester along with several nieces and nephews.

MARJORIE V. TRIPP

Age 89, of Bergen, died peacefully Thursday June 9, 2016 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born October 16, 1927 in Bergen, NY, a daughter of the late Olin and Florence (Yarnell) Bissell also preceded in death by her husband, Guy Tripp; brother, James Bissell and a sister, Marian Kenner.     

Mrs. Tripp enjoyed country music, playing cards, taking trips and most importantly family and time spent with them. 

Surviving are her loving sons, Gary (Kathryn Sobresky) Tripp and James (Terry) Tripp all of Batavia; grandchildren, James Tripp, Jeremy (Jessica) Tripp, Robert (Mindy Snyder) Tripp, Christopher (Elizabeth) Tripp and Kelly (Will) Smith; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Scott, Shawn, Natalie, Nicholas, Collin, Brooklyn, Liam, Alaina, Amelia & Owen Tripp and Harper Smith; former daughter-in-law, Cindy Tripp of Basom; sister, Kathleen Miller of FL and sister-in-law, Phyllis Bissell of NC along with several nieces and nephews.  

At Mrs. Tripp's request there is no visitation and funeral services will be held privately by her family. She will be buried in Mt. Rest Cemetery in Bergen and in lieu of flowers memorials in her memory can be made to either, Town of Batavia or East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Departments.
