While out in Oakfield today, I found Karl Dilcher running a Mother's Day chicken BBQ. This was the first day that Dilcher, owner of Alli's Cones & Dogs, offered chicken BBQ, something he says he plans to do every day, plus offer the service as catering for special events, including charities, graduations, weddings, etc. Pictured with Diltcher is Shorty Thomas, now working for Dilcher, who worked for years for Clor's.

Photos: Santa makes his rounds in Genesee County

By Howard B. Owens

Santa had a busy day in Genesee County today and I did my best to keep up with him.

I first found him at the Holland Land Office Museum, where his appearance coincided with the annual Children's Gala. Children made cookies, watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, ate pizza and let Santa in on what presents they'll be dreaming about on Christmas Eve.

Next, I found Santa at Alli's Cones and Dogs in Oakfield. At Alli's, both children and adults whispered in Santa's ear.

Finally, Santa promised the Genesee Sno Packers at their annual open house that their Christmas wish for snow will be granted. He also added all the good children who came to visit him to his long list of boys and girls who will find their desired gifts on Christmas morning.

Alli's expanding its catering business

By Howard B. Owens

Expanding the catering business of Alli's Cones and Dogs has long been on owner Carl Dilcher's agenda, but marketing such a business takes a lot of time.

Now Dilcher has got Sarah Veazey promoting and selling catering for Alli's and he's ready to expand that part of his business.

"I just needed somebody to help get going with it," Dilcher said.

Veazey said the Alli's catering service will be different from what other catering businesses offer because customers can put together their own menu.

"We’re offering an open menu," Veazey said. "If you have your heart set on stuffed chicken and baked tomatoes, we can offer it. Where the other guys pretty much have a set menu, we’re open to pretty much anything."

Dilcher said Alli's can offer any kind of entree -- from beef on weck to smoked turkey, and with partnerships he's established can offer any kind of BBQ as well as set ups of tents, tables and chairs.

"Give us a call we we’ll quote a price and take it from there and see what we can do," Dilcher said.
