Food drive by postal carriers collects bounty for local charities

On Saturday, postal carriers in Batavia -- as part of a national campaign -- collected food donations from postal customers.  Folks on carriers' routes were asked to leave food in bags for pickup.

Brandon Snyder, who organized the drive locally, said that as of 2 p.m., 1,136 pounds of food were donated to Care-a-Van and another 1,435 points to the Salvation Army, with other local charities expected to pick up donations.

Food drive at Richmond Library through Nov. 18

Join the Richmond Memorial Library in assisting families in need in our community.

The RML Teen and Tween Programming Group will sponsor a food drive collection from November 1st-November 18th, 2022 at Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St, Batavia.  Below are some suggestions of acceptable items. Please make sure all items are not past expiration and are non-perishables! 

A donation bin will be located in the foyer of the library and donations can be dropped off during regular library hours.  Donations will be delivered to the Salvation Army.  Questions can be directed to Teen Services Librarian Felicia Cecere (fcecere@nioga.org) or Library Assistant Ellen Brokaw (ebrokaw@nioga.org).

Suggested Items for Donation:

Boxed Stuffing Mix, Instant Mashed Potatoes, Jars of Gravy (or Gravy Mix Packets), Canned Yams, Cranberry Sauce, Canned Vegetables, Cornbread Mix, Canned Pie Fillings, Pie Crust Mix, Box Dessert Mixes, Drink Mixes, Coffee, Tea, Crackers, Foil Baking Pans, Paper Products.

Richmond Memorial Library is located at 19 Ross St in the City of Batavia. The library is open Mon-Thurs 9 am - 9 pm and Fri & Sat 9 am - 5 pm. For more about the library, visit batavialibrary.org

 

1,400 items collected at Pembroke annual December Drive

The students, teachers, and staff at Pembroke Intermediate School participated in their annual December Drive which benefits the Corfu Food Pantry. This year, almost 1,400 items were collected! Student Council members, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students delivered the food on Friday, December 17.   

“This is one of the Intermediate School’s favorite holiday traditions. The entire school and community comes together to help those in need,”  said student council and 6th grade teacher Arron Brown.

Iroquois Trail Cub Scouts Food Drive

Cub Scout Pack 112 is looking for donations of nonperishable food items for a holiday food drive. The items will be donated to the Jackson School Elementary Backpack Program for children in need. 

If you received a hanger on your door you can leave the food outside for pick up this Saturday, Dec. 15th. If you did not receive a door hanger and would like to donate, please send an email to dtvburns@yahoo.comwith an address for pick up this Saturday.

RSVP and AmeriCorps collecting non-perishable food items until Aug. 31 for needy to honor 9/11 victims and responders

Genesee County’s RSVP and AmeriCorps programs are coordinating a service project to help community members in need as a way to honor 9/11 victims and those who rose in service in response to 9/11. Non-perishable food items will be collected from Aug. 14 – 31 at the following RSVP volunteer stations, AmeriCorps host sites and County Government offices: 

  • Genesee County Office for the Aging & Youth Bureau, 2 Bank St., Batavia;
  • Genesee County Building I, 15 Main St., Batavia (3rd Floor near elevator);
  • Genesee County Building II, 3837 W. Main Street Road, Batavia;
  • Catholic Charities, 25 Liberty St., Suite 7, Batavia;
  • Gillam-Grant Community Center, 6966 W. Bergen Road, Bergen;
  • Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia.

All donations will be delivered to local food pantries during the week of 9/11.

Batavia police conducting a food drive

The Batavia Police Department is conducting a food drive for the holidays.

The Child Advocacy Center (C.A.C.), located in the City of Batavia, serves Genesee County and several other surrounding counties. The C.A.C. serves countless families with children that have been affected by physical or sexual abuse. Many of these families are in need of assistance, especially around this time of year.

The Batavia Police Department is asking for donations of non-perishable food items which will then be distributed among these families in need. You may drop off your donations at the Batavia Police Department during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sponsored Post: St. Joseph's Food Drive This Saturday!

St. Joseph Catholic School will be holding a food drive to support the Genesee County Food Bank this Saturday, December 1st, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the school, located at 2 Summit Street in Batavia.

Donations of non-perishable boxed, bagged or canned goods will accepted and those that donate will be able to pull up and drop off their donation. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload donations.

St Joseph’s is participating in a contest sponsored by Channel 2’s (WGRZ) meteorologist Andy Parker. The school is hoping to collect enough donations to win a visit from Andy and the weather machine. The school is currently in 8th place and has collected 235 pounds of food, enough for 196 meals. Since the contest is judged by weight, organizers encourage donations such as bags of rice and large cans of fruit and vegetables.

Alexander Pack 650 Food Drive

This Saturday, November 14th the Alexander Pack 650 Cub Scout group will be having their annual Round Up for Food Drive. The non-perishable food will be collected, sorted and taken to a local food pantry to hand out to needy families. If you would like to donate items you may by:
1.        If a door hanger was left on your door you may put the items in a bag and place them outside of the door where the hanger was left. Please put the food out by 9am so the scout may pick it up.

2.        If you did not receive a hanger and would like to donate you may bring the item to the Alexander Elementary School Cafeteria from 9:30am till 11am.

3.        You may also call 716-560-1659 and a local scout with his parent will pick them up at your house. If there is no answer please, leave a message and someone will get back to you.

This round up is for the Alexander District but other local scouts may also be doing a food drive. Contact your local Cub Scout pack for details on their drive.

Assemblyman Hawley Announces Local Food Drive

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) today announced that he is hosting a local food drive throughout the 139th Assembly District in order to help those hit hardest in these tough economic times.

“The generosity and kindness of Western New York residents never ceases to amaze me and while many of our friends and neighbors are struggling right now, there are many of us that know how fortunate we are and grateful that we can help those less fortunate. I am sure that the residents of the 139th Assembly District will show their generous spirit yet again with this food drive that will be benefiting our local food pantries in order to help families, seniors and individuals in need,” said Hawley.

The Assemblyman has posted drop boxes in a variety of locations throughout Genesee, Monroe, Niagara and Orleans counties within the 139th Assembly District where residents can leave non-perishable food donations. The donations will be given to local charities, shelters, and food pantries, including the Salvation Army, Life Solutions, Hilton Food Shelf, Brockport Food Shelf, and Orleans Community Action, among others.
