Cougars fall in National Semifinals

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team fell to Onondaga Community College in the semifinals of the NJCAA National Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York.

Genesee, the at-large team in the Final Four, gave up the first goal of the game to the top team in the tournament just seven seconds into the first quarter. Onondaga scored six times in the opening frame and led 6-0 at the start of the second.

Genesee had the man advantage early on in the second period but could not break through. After returning to full strength, Onondaga found the back of the net twice in a span of five seconds to increase their lead to 8-0.

Steven Riamondi (Amherst, NY) got GCC on the board with a goal at the 4:22 mark of the second quarter, and then Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) scored short-handed less than a minute later to get Genesee back to within six at 8-2. Onondaga added a goal with about four minutes remaining in the first half and took a 9-2 lead into the break.

OCC started strong in the second half, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the third quarter and opened up a ten-goal, 12-2 lead. Trailing 14-2, Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) assisted Printup on his second goal of the game to make it 14-3.

Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) answered an early fourth quarter OCC goal with his first goal of the game to make it 15-4 with just under eight minutes to play. He added another goal just two minutes later before Printup followed with his third goal of the game to make it 15-6. Both teams would play a scoreless three-minutes to end the game, and Onondaga advances with a 15-6 victory.

Genesee ends the season with a 15-4 overall record after advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second straight season. They were Western New York Athletic Conference Champions and reached the Final Four of the Region III Tournament. Onondaga Community College will play for their fourth straight NJCAA National Title and sixth in the last seven years against the winner of Nassau Community College and the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex tomorrow at 1pm.

GCC Men's Lacrosse loses to Monroe

(Herkimer, NY) The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team fell to Monroe Community College in the Region III Final Four on Saturday afternoon, 12-11.

Both teams played to a 2-2 tie after the first quarter before the Tribunes outscored the Cougars 5-2 in the second period to take a 7-4 lead into the half.

Genesee scored the first two goals of the second half to get to within one, and from then on it was a back-and-forth game. Trailing 12-9 in the fourth quarter, GCC scored two quick goals to draw within one once again, but could not get the equalizer on their final possession during the final thirty seconds of the game.

Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) scored four times on the afternoon, Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) scored two goals and also added three assists and Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) chipped in a goal and an assist.

At midfield, Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) had three goals and an assist, Tom Owen (Clarence, NY) added a goal and an assist and Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) had two assists.

With the loss, Genesee is eliminated from the Region III Playoffs and will now wait until the selections are made for the NJCAA National Tournament to see if their season continues.

GCC Men's Lacrosse Advances in Region III Playoffs

The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team opened up the Region III Playoffs with a 20-0 shutout win over visiting Finger Lakes Community College on Wednesday night.

The matchup was the second meeting between the two teams this season, with GCC notching a 23-8 victory on the road against FLCC in early March.

Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) was brilliant in net, turning aside all 18 shots he faced to record Genesee's second shutout win of the season.

The game was scoreless until the 6:37 mark in the first quarter when a Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) goal gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) followed with his first of six goals on the night to increase the lead to 2-0, which GCC took into the second quarter.

GCC managed three goals in the second period which saw almost an hour delay due to weather. Goals by Jason Harasimowicz (Batavia, NY) , Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) and Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY) gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead at the half.

The Genesee offense got rolling in the second half with five goals in the third quarter and ten goals in the fourth to cruise to the quarterfinals victory.

The GCC defensive unit made up of Vin Pedro (Batavia, NY), Jordan McElligot (Spencerport, NY), Dylan Hickey (Hilton, NY), Dave Lehman (Edmonton, AB) and Aaron Hayward (Hilton, NY) combined for 12 takeaways and 33 ground balls.

Printup led the offense with four goals and three assists, Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) finished with three goals and an assist and Latimer chipped in a goal and two assists.

Palvino paced the midfield with six goals and an assist and Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) added a goal and six assists.

Genesee advances to the Region III Semifinals and will play Monroe Community College on Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm at Herkimer County Community College.

GCC Men's Lacrosse rolls SUNY Delhi

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team turned in another dominating performance on Saturday afternoon as they rolled visiting SUNY Delhi, 27-4.

Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) led all scorers with six goals and three assists. Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) added five goals and three assists, putting him over the 100-point mark on the season, giving him a total of 103. Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON), who broke his own school record for most points in a single season on Wednesday night, set the school record for most goals in a single season with 63, breaking his mark last year of 62. He scored three goals and had two assists.

Jason Harasimowicz (Batavia, NY) led the midfield with three goals and one assist, Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY) had two goals and an assist and Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) scored twice. Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY), Keaton Taylor-Lazore (Salamanca, NY) and Steve Raimondi (Amherst, NY) each had a goal and an assist.

Vin Pedro (Batavia, NY) led the defense with eight ground balls, one takeaway and one assist. Dave Lehman (Edmonton, AB) had three takeaways and three ground balls.

Rashad Brown (Lockport, NY) and Mike Breindel (Hamburg, NY) combined to win 26 of 35 face offs.

In goal, Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) and Brady Lawrence (St. Catherines, ON) combined to make seven saves.

Genesee ends the regular season with a 14-2 record and will host a Region III playoff game on Tuesday night, time and opponent to be announced.

Cougars win WNYAC Title

The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team earned the Western New York Athletic Conference title with a win over Mercyhurst North East on Wednesday night, defeating the visiting Saints 14-3.

Genesee took a 1-0 lead on a first quarter goal from Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON), who needed just four points entering the night to break the GCC record for most points in a single season, a record he set last year with 99 points. Latimer made it 3-0 with a goal about five minutes later and then earned a hat trick with a goal to make it 5-1 at the end of the opening quarter.

After taking a 6-1 lead into the halftime break, Latimer assisted on an early second half goal by Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY), earning his 100th point of the season and setting the single season points record. The Cougars scored eight of the final nine goals and wrapped up the WNYAC title with a perfect 4-0 conference record this season.

Latimer finished with three goals and two assists, giving him 101 points on the season. Printup added five goals and two assists and Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) chipped in two goals.

Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) and Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY) led the midfield with a goal and an assist each.

Defensively, Aaron Hayward (Hilton, NY) had ten ground balls and two takeaways and Vin Pedro (Batavia, NY) had three takeaways and four ground balls.

Genesee improves to 13-2 overall on the year and will conclude the regular season on Saturday when they host SUNY Delhi at 2pm.

Men's Lacrosse blanks Mohawk Valley

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team responded to Saturday afternoon’s loss at the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex with a dominating win over visiting Mohawk Valley Community College, 22-0 on Monday night.

Coming off just their second loss of the season, the Cougars scored seven times in the opening quarter to take the early advantage. They took a 13-0 lead into halftime, added five goals in the third quarter and then four goals in the fourth.

Genesee had fifteen players record a point in the game, led offensively by Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) with four goals and three assists. Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) and Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) each added four goals and an assist.

At midfield, Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) added three goals and two assists and Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY) chipped in a four-point night with a goal and three assists.

Dylan Hickey (Hilton, NY) led the defense with nine ground balls, two takeaways and one goal. Dave Lehman (Edmonton, AB) also had a strong night defensively with four ground balls, two takeaways and one goal.

Goalies Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) and Zack Wilson (Lewis Center, OH) combined for eight saves in Genesee’s first shutout win since March 16, 2011 when the Cougars beat Cayuga Community College 17-0.

Genesee improves to 10-2 on the season and will travel to Niagara County Community College on Wednesday for a 4pm start.

GCC Men's Lacrosse rolls Alfred

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team got off to a fast start on Thursday night against visiting Alfred State College and did not look back.

The Cougars scored the first ten goals of the game and cruised to a 27-6 victory. In total, 18 different players recorded a point. GCC was 22 of 23 on clears and a perfect five for five with the man advantage.

Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) led the way with five goals on the night. Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) scored four times, Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) added two goals and three assists and Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) scored twice and also added four assists. Brady Lawrence (St. Catherines, Ontario) played 45 minutes in net and made ten saves allowing just three goals. Dylan Hickey (Hilton, NY) Jordan McElligot (Spencerport, NY) and Dave Lehman (Edmonton, AB) combined for five takeaways and 16 ground balls on defense. Rashad Brown (Lockport, NY) was 10 of 15 on faceoffs.

The Cougars improve to 7-1 on the season and have now won seven straight games. They will travel to Herkimer County Community College on Saturday for a 1pm start

Cougars win sixth Straight

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team won their sixth straight game on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Cardinals of the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville 15-7.

Genesee scored under a minute into the first quarter when Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) cashed in on a pass from Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY). Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) followed with back-to-back goals and then Latimer returned the favor to Chapman who scored to make it 4-0 GCC with under two minutes to go in the opening frame. The Cardinals added a late first quarter goal, but Genesee responded with the next three tallies in the second quarter, including two from Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY). Genesee led 7-2 at the intermission.

Chapman opened the second half with his second goal of the game before Latimer added his second and Printup added his third to give GCC a 10-2 lead. Latimer found the back of the net three more times in the fourth quarter and Printup added one in the final six minutes to boost Genesee to the eight goal victory.

Latimer finished with five goals and an assist, Printup added four goals and also had three assists. Defensively, goalkeeper Brady Lawrence (St. Catherines, ON) made 20 saves in net and Aaron Hayward (Hilton, NY) had three takeaways and six ground balls. Vin Pedro (Batavia, NY) had three takeaways, four ground balls and also added an assist and Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) chipped in with three assits. Mike Breindel (Hamburg, NY) went 8 of 12 on faceoffs.

Genesee (6-1) will play again on Thursday night when they host Alfred State at 7pm.

Cougars drop Hudson Valley

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team played through the cold and snow on Saturday afternoon to defeat visiting Hudson Valley Community College 18-6.

Genesee gave up the first two goals of the game before finding the back of the net late in the first quarter. Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) scored with just over six minutes remaining in the opening period to cut the Vikings lead down to 2-1 and then Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) tied the game at two, about three minutes later.

The Cougars took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring six of the seven goals in the period. Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) gave GCC its first lead of the game at 3-2 when he came away with a steal behind the Vikings net and then beat the Hudson Valley goaltender on a backhand shot. The Vikings answered to tie the game at three before Genesee ripped off five unanswered goals to end the first half, including a second goal from Latimer and Printup and second and third goals from Palvino.

The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure in the second half and scored six times in the third quarter. Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY) scored early and Latimer’s third goal of the game with just under four minutes left in the third gave Genesee a 13-3 lead.

Hudson Valley ended a nearly two-quarter scoring drought with an early goal in the fourth, but it was too late as Genesee got two more goals from Latimer and cruised to the 12 goal victory.

Latimer finished the afternoon with five goals and three assists, Palvino found the back of the net three times, Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) tallied four assists and Printup scored twice. Rashad Brown (Lockport, NY) and Mike Breindel (Hamburg, NY) combined to go 20 of 23 on face offs and defenseman Aaron Hayward (Hilton, NY) led the way with two takeaways, six ground balls and also added a goal.

GCC improves to 5-1 on the season and will host the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville on Tuesday at 4pm for their next contest.

GCC Men's Lacrosse wins home Opener

The fourth-ranked Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team cruised past Broome Community College on Wednesday night, defeating the Hornets 19-3 in their home opener of the 2012 season.

Coming off of their first win of the year against Finger Lakes Community College last week, the Cougars were on the board early when Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) scored his 13th goal of the season to give Genesee the 1-0 lead. Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) and Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) followed with back-to-back goals to put Genesee out in front 3-0 with about five minutes gone by in the first quarter. The Hornets would fight back, scoring the next two goals to cut the GCC lead down to one before the Cougars took control of the game. Genesee scored the next ten goals of the first half, including a second from Latimer and Printup and a second and third from Gill, and held a 13-2 lead at the half.

The second half was more of the same as Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY) continued the Genesee scoring streak with an early third quarter goal that put the Cougars on top 14-2. Latimer scored his third goal of the game before Broome ended their scoreless drought and a 12-goal GCC scoring streak, tallying their third and final goal of the game. The Cougars would add one more third quarter goal and three goals in the fourth quarter and cruised to the 16 goal victory.

Gill ended the night with five goals and two assists. Printup tallied three goals and four assists, Latimer netted three goals and also had an assist and Rashad Brown (Lockport, NY) was 13 of 15 on face-offs and also led the team in ground balls with nine.

Genesee split time between three goalies on the night. Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) saw 30 minutes of action and stopped eight shots, Zack Wilson (Lewis Center, OH) played 15 minutes and made five saves and Brady Lawrence (St. Catherines, Ontario) also played 15 minutes and stopped the only shot he saw.

The Cougars improve to 2-1 on the season and will play next at Jefferson Community College on Saturday at 4pm.
