Special edition of Reel Discussion at Richmond library: 'Hocus Pocus'

A special edition of Reel Discussion is planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Richmond Memorial Library.

Everyone is invited to watch the movie and join in a group discussion about it afterward.

"Hocus Pocus" is the film: "You're in for a devil of a time when three outlandishly wild witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) return to 17th Century Salem, Ma., after they're accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters.

Fall Story Times announced for Richmond library, starts week of Sept. 16

Fall Story Times are starting soon at the Richmond Memorial Library!

  • Tuesday Toddler Time - Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. (walkers – 3 years)
  • Early Toddler Time - Wednesdays  at 9:30 a.m. (walkers – 3 years)
  • Wednesday Toddler Time - Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. (walkers -3 years)
  • Preschool Story Time - Thursdays at 10 a.m. (ages 3-5 years)
  • PJ  Story Time - Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. (all ages)

The fall series of story times start the week of Sept. 16th and end the week of Nov. 13th.

To register or for more information call the Library 343-9550, ext. 4, or stop in at the Children's Room desk during Library hours: Monday through Thursday -- 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Richmond library's adult Summer Reading Program starts June 23, ends Aug. 8

Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia is presenting “Fizz, Boom, READ!,” a Summer Reading Club for Adults from June 23 through Aug. 8. Participants are encouraged to read through the summer, and a small gift is awarded for finishing six books.

In addition, participants receive entry forms for a chance to win some theme-related grand prizes, including laboratory beaker mugs and gift certificates to the library’s café, kitchen science kits, and gift cards.

Other library events related to “Fizz, Boom, READ!” include a “What’s with the Weather?” talk, The Science of Bread demonstration, special movie showings, and an “Upcycle That!” Contest. More information is available at the library, by calling 343-9550, ext. 2, and at www.batavialibrary.org.

Reel Discussion at Richmond library features film about how Mary Poppins was created

This month’s movie is “Saving Mr. Banks.” This film is a fascinating look at the circuitous "collaborative" process Walt Disney, his creative team, and author P.L. Travers engaged in to bring the character Mary Poppins to life on the Big Screen in the early 1960s. This touching, funny film is really two stories nicely tied up in one appealing package.

Vote on Richmond Memorial Library budget and trustee election is today until 9 p.m.

Richmond Memorial Library's budget vote and trustee election takes place today (Tuesday, May 6) until the library closes at 9 p.m. Voting takes place in the library's Gallery Room. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia.

Any registered voter residing in the Batavia City School district is eligible to vote.

All-Weather Gang Art Show opens at Richmond Library

Spring Story Times at the Richmond Memorial Library start Tuesday March 19th and run until May 23rd.

Pokemon Party at Richmond library

Two new programs are coming to the Richmond Memorial Library during winter break.

Are you a Pokémanic? Come join us at the Richmond library at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28 for a Pokémon Party! There will be crafts, stories and games. Children can dress up as their favorite Pokémon. Registration is required.

Christmas card class for adults at Richmond library

A Christmas card class for adults is offered at Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia, on Monday, Dec. 3.

It will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

Learn to make eight cards and an ornament in this class taught by Jenn Cascell. Registration is required and $6 for supplies is due at the time of registration.

Knitters' class on Celtic cable stitch at Richmond library

Celtic Cable Scarf Class at Richmond Memorial Library

Learn an easy technique to master knitting the Celtic cable stitch. This class for intermediate knitters is taught by Linda Daviau. It takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and registration is required.

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic novel has been artfully and delicately translated to the big screen.

Kids' Halloween Party at Richmond library -- wear your costumes!

Reel Discussion at Richmond Memorial Library in August will feature the movie "Midnight in Paris." It begins at 6 o'clock on Thursday evening, Aug. 23.

Paris is a city that lends itself to daydreaming, to walking the streets and imagining all sorts of magic. "Midnight in Paris" is about a screenwriter hero named Gil who strolls the lanes of Paris with his head in the clouds and walks right into his own best fantasy.

Richmond Children's Library offers American Girl programs

The Richmond Memorial Library Children’s Room invites you to celebrate being a girl with our American Girl programs in April.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14: A day in the life of Josefina -- learn all about American Girl Josefina with our special presenter Teresa Wood. She will bring in a dollhouse representing the time and setting in which Josefina lived.

Ages 6 and up are welcomed to attend. Registration is required.

And at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21: Crafty Girls -- Create an American Girl spring craft for your hair. Ages 7 and up are welcomed to attend. Registration is required.

Richmond library offers free eBook Class, registration required

Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia is offering an eBook Class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. Registration is required for this free class and group size is limited. Call the library at 343-9550, ext. 2, to register.

Participants will learn how to borrow and download eBooks from the library’s website. At 11 a.m., instruction will be given for the Nook, Sony, and Kobo readers. At 12 p.m., instruction will be given for the Kindle.

Little detectives scouting for Dewey the Dragon

Can you find Dewey the Dragon?

Dewey the Dragon is traveling around Batavia to spread the word to all children and families about the Summer Reading Club at Richmond Memorial Library.

Each week Dewey will travel to a different local business. Weekly clues to the places Dewey may be visiting can be found on the children’s page of the library’s website ( <http://www.batavialibrary.org/> ) or by visiting the Children’s Room.

Send us a picture of Dewey at each new weekly location via email*, Facebook, or show it to the Children’s Room staff to be entered to win weekly prize drawings. (email: kmarc@nioga.org *please put Dewey in the subject line)

Dewey moves to his new location Saturday afternoons. He will return to the Richmond Memorial Library by June 27 for the beginning of the "You are Here ... BookLand!” Summer Reading Club.

Homeschool read aloud

Join us every Thursday morning at the Richmond Memorial Library as we read and discuss, The Birchbark House by Louise Erdich

Notebooks will be provided to registered participants to maintain a weekly journal of *chapter summaries*

Since we are fitting a lot into 30 minutes we are hopeful that everyone is here and ready to begin promptly at 10:00 am. Recommended age for participation is 8 to 14.

*The chapter summaries are an optional homework assignment and format can be determined by parents based on the writing skill level of each child.
