BB varsity athletes achieve 100-percent Scholar-Athlete Team awards

The Byron-Bergen Senior High School proudly announces that every fall varsity Byron-Bergen sport team achieved the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team award.

The fall sports teams are cheerleading, boys cross-country, girls cross-country, football, gymnastics, boys soccer, girls soccer and girls volleyball.

“Here at Byron-Bergen we are always proud of our student athletes and their accomplishments,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “This fall we are especially proud that all of our fall teams made the NYS Scholar-Athlete Team award.

"As Athletic Director, I am extremely blessed to work with such great student athletes and coaches. This particular recognition is a great testament to the student athletes and what it takes to perform at a high level. In and out of the classroom, our kids are getting it done!”

The Scholar-Athlete program recognizes athletes for their academic success. NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team awards go to teams whose average GPA of 75 percent of the athletic team equals 90 or above.

Three Batavia Soccer Club teams win league championships

The Batavia Soccer Club is pleased to announce the successful completion of our fall soccer season with three of our teams earning championship titles in the Livingston County Fall Soccer League!

Games were held every Saturday in September and October in Geneseo, York, and Livonia, culminating in a season-ending tournament on Saturday, Oct. 20th.

The Batavia Soccer Club had 110 participants on nine teams enter this very competitive league which is comprised of third- through sixth-grade boys and girls teams from Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Monroe, and Wyoming counties.

Our three championship-winning teams included two teams from the fifth- and sixth-grade girls division and one team from the third- and fourth-grade girls division.

The Batavia Soccer Club has served Genesee County and the surrounding area for more than 40 years. With more than 600 summer program participants in 2018, it is one of the largest and most successful youth sports program in the region.

Byron-Bergen girls soccer raises $3,000 for cancer research

On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Byron-Bergen soccer teams took to the field looking to score more than one kind of goal. Of course, they wanted to win their games but they also wanted to raise awareness for testicular cancer and a monetary donation to the Wilmont Cancer Institute.

They were successful on all fronts. The varsity girls won 3-0 against Alexander and the varsity boys won 4-1 against Attica. Byron-Bergen players set aside their burgundy team jerseys and played in T-shirts, blue for testicular cancer awareness, reading “Kickin' Cancer” on the front. In addition, they collected $2,910 in cash and checks.

Several vendors were present at the event who will donate a percentage of their sales to the total. When those final numbers are in, the teams are hopeful that it will bring the total to $3,000.

The check presentation to the Wilmont Cancer Institute will be scheduled for later in the school year.

More than 90 kids turned out for Ricky Palermo annual soccer clinic

More than 90 children from age 4 to age 8 turned out at the Batavia Sports Park on Friday for Ricky Palermo's annual soccer clinic.

This was the 15th year Palermo hosted the clinic.

"It grows a little bit every year and that's exciting," Palermo said.

The clinic helps raise awareness about spinal injury, Palermo said, and shows the kids that even a person with a spinal injury can still do things.

Holmes Named USC Scholar All-American

Genesee Community College men's soccer captain Glenn Holmes was named to the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Men's Scholar All-America First Team Dec. 15 by the national chair of the USC Junior College Men's Scholar All-America Committee, Chris Handy. Holmes will be honored by the UCS at its 71st convention in January 2018.

The 2017 National Junior College Athletic Association National Champion Cougars were co-captained by Holmes, who hails from Kildare, Ireland. The sports management major was just one of four overall junior college players who were recognized as first-team selections both on the field and in the classroom by the USC. At the junior college division-three level, he was just one of two to achieve the feat and the lone defensive player in the country.

Although known more for his stealth defensive play, Holmes' offensive numbers were quite astonishing. He led all NJCAA defenders in points with 32 and goals with 13. In addition, the Genesee sophomore was the catalyst behind the team's amazing run that ended with a 10-game winning streak and a 20-game unbeaten streak in bringing the Cougars its first national championship in soccer.

This is the third time Holmes has been honored this season as a first-team all-American. In addition to the two aforementioned USC All-American accolades, Holmes was also named to the NJCAA All-American squad as well.

GCC's men's soccer team wins national championship

The Genesee Community College men's soccer team came from behind to win its first-ever National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association D-III men's soccer national title by beating the reigning champion and top-seed Richland College (Tx.) 2-1 at Herkimer County Community College, Sunday.

It was Genesee's third-overall national title and GCC President James M. Sunser made the sojourn to Herkimer and was on hand when GCC Athletic Director Kristen Schuth was presented the championship plaque.

Iyad Lablack scored the game-winner six minutes into the second half off a Joseph Calvert pass and then the team relied on its defense and tournament most valuable player David Ormiston to do the rest, as the Cougar keeper recorded four saves in the win.

"Dave (Ormiston) had a really great game and the defense stuck to their job," Cougars Head Coach Ken Gavin said immediately after the game.

After James Sasay gave the Thunderducks a 1-0 lead about 10 minutes into the game, Genesee's Charlie Livesey responded 14 minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 after Billy Murphy sent Livesey in alone on goal from the left side.

After Lablack gave the Cougars the second-half lead, the strong defensive team sat back and only allowed one shot the rest of the way, and Genesee successfully defended 16 corner kicks during the contest.

Joining Ormiston with national tournament accolades was Glenn Holmes and Philip Melo -- who were both named to the all-tournament team.

After the Cougars started the season with a 1-2 record, Coach Gavin wondered if his team was as good as he originally thought. The team answered that question by going unbeaten the rest of the campaign that culminated with the national championship win. Genesee ended its season unbeaten in its last 20 games with the last 11 being wins.

"When we were 1-2 we lost to a very good Camden team that we beat in this tournament. I think I was proven right that we weren't as good as we could be. But they started playing the system and buying into it. I think that we've scored 380 goals in three years and there's a reason we scored them. The system works if you buy into it; you can get where you need to be."

The team opened national tournament play with a 3-1 win over the Howard Community College Dragons, Nov. 9. Then followed that win with another 3-1 victory over the Camden Community College  Cougars Nov. 10, before besting Richland's Thunderducks, 2-1 this afternoon. All told, Genesee slew the Dragons, caged the Cougars and stole the thunder from the Ducks, respectively.

Asked to pick an unsung hero or two, Gavin responded, "Everybody on the bench is the unsung heroes. They pushed everybody in practice; others didn't see that. They (bench players) pushed the first-string players where they needed to be."

Byron-Bergen/Elba will play for soccer state championship after 4-0 in semifinals

Four second-half goals propelled the Byron-Bergen/Elba Bees boys soccer team into the state finals as they beat Lake Placid in the Class C semifinals today, 4-0.

The #1 ranked Bees play for the state championship tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in Middleton.

The Byron-Bergen/Elba Bees took on the Lake Placid Bombers for the NYS Class C Semi-Finals in Middletown, NY. The BB/Elba team got off to a strong start with multiple scoring opportunities in the first half.

The Bombers withstood the BB/Elba attackers and the first half remained deadlocked at 0-0. The BB/Elba team continued putting pressure on the Lake Placid defenders early in the second half. The Bees broke through the Bombers defense when Adam Swapceinski fed Kyle Foeller for the games first goal.

But Swapceinski didn’t stop there and, within minutes, scored two goals of his own. Late in the game, Wade Thompson beat multiple defenders before blasting a shot past the Lake Placid goalkeeper to put the Class C Semi-Final game out of reach. Bee’s goalkeeper, Brandon Kropf recorded his sixth shutout, in a row, in postseason play.

The Byron-Bergen/Elba Bees play for the Class C State Championship on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m. in Middletown, NY.

Byron-Bergen/Elba Soccer heading to Final Four ranked #1 in the state

The Byron-Bergen/Elba boys soccer team is 19-1-1, ranked #1 in the state and on the verge of playing for a Class C state championship.

The captured a Section V title by beating Bishop Kearney in a second overtime period and then went on to win the Far West Regional title.

The Final Four begins at 1:30 p.m., Saturday in Middletown with B-B/Elba taking on Lake Placid. The finals will be played the following day in Middletown at 10:30 a.m.

GCCs men's soccer team wins regional title

The No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team is heading back again to the National Junior Athletic Association D-III National Tournament after blanking Cayuga Community College 3-0 Oct. 29 in the Region III District A Championship game.

The region's top-seeded Cougars have now outscored their opponents 53-1 during their current eight-game winning streak. The win also extended the team's unbeaten streak to 17 games.

Current NJCAA D-III Goalie of the Week David Ormiston recorded five saves in the win and was named the tournament's most valuable player in leading the team to its seventh-consecutive shutout and 12th of the season.

Ross White got the game winner almost 30 minutes into the contest and Ben Wattis extended the Cougars' lead to 2-0 about 10 minutes later to round out the first-half scoring.

Charlie Livesey had the lone goal of the second half about 25 minutes into the session to add some insurance to the Cougars' lead.

Cayuga outshot Genesee 11-8 in total shots and shots on net 5-3. Each team had a half dozen corner kicks and the physical game produced eight yellow cards collectively.

Also selected to the all-tournament team from Genesee were Livesey, Wattis, and Glenn Holmes, with the latter assisting on Wattis' goal. Cayuga's Mikel Abando and Santiago Ortega were also selected.

Genesee heads to the NJCAA National Tournament as one of eight teams Nov. 9-12 at Wehrum Stadium. The men's soccer D-III nationals are hosted by Herkimer College, who will join the Cougars from Region III after defeating Onondaga Community College 4-0 in the last regional title game of the night that followed the Cougars' win.

No. 7 Women’s Soccer Team Bows in Regional Semifinal

The No. 7 Genesee Community College women's soccer team ran into a hot goaltender in losing their semifinal regional matchup against Jamestown Community College 4-2, Oct. 25.

Genesee out-shot the Jayhawks by a 2-1 margin and despite some golden opportunities couldn't find a way to beat the opposition's keeper.

Miko Yamashita staked the Cougars to a 1-0 lead, but the Jayhawks responded with the next three goals.

Julie Kommer cut the deficit to a single goal at 3-2 with about a dozen minutes to go, but Jamestown sealed the game with a breakaway goal late to restore the Jayhawks' two-goal lead.

Katline Cartwright and Leah Czechowski also picked up assists, but it was Kommer who really put most of the pressure on Jamestown with a team-high five shots as the Cougars went much of the second-half without Yamashita due to injury.

The Cougars out-shot the Jayhawks 16-8 with 15 finding their way to the net. Genesee keeper Jaclyn Guzdek registered four saves on the night with almost all of them being outstanding including one just five minutes into the second half.

The loss dropped the Cougars' season record to 13-4-1.

Livesey Sets Cougar Record as Genesee Men's Soccer Team Advances to Region Title Match

The No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team shutout Tompkins-Cortland Community College 7-0, Oct. 26 and advanced to the District A Region III Championship to be played Oct. 29 against Cayuga Community College.

The region's top-seeded Cougars improved their current win streak to seven games, where they have outscored their opponents 50-1 during that streak with the last six wins via shutout.

Genesee nearly doubled its offensive output since the teams last met Sept. 9 with a 4-0 Cougars win, that also improved their unbeaten streak to 16 games.

Charlie Livesey set a new single-season assist record with a pair against the Pantherss to bring his nation-leading total to 25 and surpassing the old record by Rafael Godoi. Livesey also had a pair of goals for a team-high six-point night.

Sam Hall also scored a pair of goals with single tallies coming from Glenn Holmes, Iyad Lablack and Tate Dean, with the latter also adding an assist. Ross White and Hijiri Sano also added assists to round out the Cougars scoring.

Current and three-time 2017 National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association D-III Goalie of the Week David Ormiston played the opening 73:16 of the contest and split the shutout with Gaurav Cheema.

Genesee out-shot the Panthers 35-6, with 15 shots finding the net. The Cougars also held the edge in corner kicks, 7-2.

GCC men's soccer team hits 10 on win streak

Despite completing a road contest against No. 4 Herkimer just 18 hours from the previous day, the No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team bested visiting Fulton-Montgomery Community College 7-1 Oct. 8. The win improved the Cougars' record to 10-2-1, while the Raiders dropped to 5-5 on the season.

Charlie Livesey 's penalty kick about 30 minutes into the contest proved to be the game-winner as Livesey would finish the day with a helper as well and a three-point afternoon.

Sam Hall picked up where he left off after scoring the tying goal against the No. 4 Generals in the final minute the night before by also getting the team's first goal against the Raiders to round out the Cougars' first-half scoring.

Hijiri Sano led Genesee in the second half with two of its five goals. Phillip Melo, Ryan Price and Adam Price also added goals; while Matheus Araujo, Leo Anthony and Alejandro Ocampo added assists on the day.

David Ormiston split the contest with Gaurav Cheema in net as the pair combined for five saves.

Genesee out-shot the Raiders 36-7 with 11 Cougar shots finding the net. Genesee also held the edge in corner kicks, 11-1.

The Cougars embark on a three-game road excursion beginning with a contest against Finger Lakes Community College, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. Genesee continues on with a pair of weekend games with the first coming against North Country Community College Oct. 14 at 3 p.m., followed by a contest at Clinton Community College Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.

GCC's men’s soccer team extends undefeated streak to nine

The No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team rallied twice to keep pace with No. 4 Herkimer in finishing with a 2-2 road tie in extending their unbeaten streak to nine games.

The Cougars then went on to win the post-game penalty kick competition 3-1 for seeding purposes.

Sam Hall converted a Charlie Livesey corner kick with about 20 seconds left in regulation to send the contest into extra sessions. Prior to that Glenn Holmes converted a penalty kick to knot the game at 1-1 after both teams played a scoreless first half.

David Ormiston out-dueled his counterpart in net with a double-digit save performance with 10. In addition, he was again sharper than the Generals' goalkeeper in allowing just one goal in the penalty-kick session.

Holmes and Hall scored again during the penalty kicks with Ryan Price getting the team's third goal. That's all the Cougars would need after Ormiston stopped Herkimer's fourth shooter and made it mathematically impossible for Herkimer to win the penalty kick shootout with both teams having only one shooter remaining.

Both teams finished with four corner kicks.

This was the fourth time this season that the Cougars have faced a team that has appeared in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association polls with none of those teams able to beat Genesee. Of the four, Herkimer has appeared highest at No. 2.

No. 3 Men’s Soccer Team Brings Win Streak to Eight

The  No. 3 Genesee Community College men's soccer team took a 4-0 lead into the intermission before recording a 6-1 win over visiting Jamestown Community College Oct.4. The win was the Cougars' eighth in-a-row and left the team with a 9-2 record overall.

Philip Melo needed just a dozen minutes into the contest to notch the game's first two goals - the second of which was the official game winner.

Charlie Livesey then recorded three of his team-high six points on the team's next two goals for a 4-0 lead at the break. Livesey tallied once in each half, while earning assists on Ben Wattis' first-half goal and on Melo's game-winner to account for his impressive performance.

Rounding out the scoring was a second-half goal by Adam Price and an assist by Billy Murphy on the game's opening goal.

The Cougars out-shot the Jayhawks 29-6 overall, and 17-3 with shots on net. Leading the way in shots was Sam Hall with seven, while Melo added a half-dozen for the night.

Gaurav Cheema recorded two saves in the win, while the Cougars also held the edge in corner kicks, 9-2.

Genesee will travel to No. 4 Herkimer Oct. 7 with a 3 p.m. start. The Cougars leap-frogged over the Generals in the most recent National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association D-III Poll after Herkimer dropped a 3-2 game to Cayuga, a team the Cougars beat Sept. 20.

GCC's No. 1 Women’s Soccer Team Records Seventh Shutout Win

The No. 1 Genesee Community College women's soccer remained undefeated in National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association D-III play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Jamestown Community College Oct. 4, while improving to 9-1-1 overall.

The shutout victory was the team's seventh overall and fifth in its last seven games. Although the score was close, the statistics for the contest were not.

The Cougars out-shot the Jayhawks 37-4 overall, with 25 Cougar shots finding their way on net. Five Cougars accounted for 17 of those shots on net with Katline Cartwright leading the way with five. Sara Zakes, Miko Yamashita, Allison Duhow and Jayna Wright all registered three shots on net with the latter three finding the scoresheet.

Wright scored the game-winner about 30 minutes into the contest, while Duhow added an insurance marker five minutes into the second. Yamashita got an official assist on the second goal and set up the play on the first goal that came off a rebound.

The Cougars were just as dominant in the corner kick category holding an 11-0 edge, while Jaclyn Guzdek recorded one save for the shutout.

Genesee's next game may be their toughest the rest of the regular season as they travel to No. 3 Herkimer, Oct. 7 with a 1 p.m. start. The best margin of comparison between the two teams involves games with No. 9 Corning. Although both of those games ended 3-2, the Cougars rallied from 2-0 to win, while the Generals never held a lead in a loss to the Red Barons.

Currently, four of the nation's top-10 teams in NJCAA D-III hail from Region III with Genesee at No. 1, Erie No. 2, Herkimer No. 3, and Corning No. 9.

BHS soccer teams celebrate seniors night

Last night the Batavia Varsity girls and boys senior recognition game was held at Van Detta Stadium against Greece-Odyssey.

After double overtime, the girls game ended in a 2-2 tie with goals made by #6 Ari Brown & #13 Bri Bromley. All players stepped up their game and goalkeeper Bri Janes made multiple saves to hold Greece-Odyssey to just two goals.

The boys won 1-0 with a goal made by Andrés Mateos in the 18th minute of the game. Nathan Hamilton had four shots on goal. Due to a strong defense by seniors Brandon Bradley, Stephen Gilebarto, Kyler Preston, and Jake Stokes, Greece-Odyssey was held to no goals. This is the second shutout for goalkeeper Jake Stokes.

Sudden downpour arrives with a hopeful message

When the skies opened up around 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Batavia High School junior varsity girls soccer game, this rainbow appeared shortly thereafter. The teams kept playing, the rain eventually stopped and Batavia came away with a 3-0 victory over Greece Odyssey.

Le Roy opens the season with soccer win over Perry

The Le Roy Knights topped the Perry Yellowjackets 2-0 in the final of the Dansville Season Kickoff Tournament. Both of Le Roy's goals came during the first half.

Perry played a much better second half led by strong performances from Cameron Campbell on defense and Michael John Grover on offense. Thad Grierson made 11 saves in net. Perry continues non-league play away against Byron-Bergen/Elba on Tuesday, September 5 at 6:30 pm.

Dates announced for Summer Sports Camps at GCC for soccer and volleyball

The Genesee Community College Athletics Department has announced dates for upcoming soccer and volleyball camps to take place this summer at the College.

The camps will be taught by GCC coaches and players as well as other select coaches and players, and offer young athletes an opportunity to learn the skills and techniques of the game all while having fun.

Boys and girls ages 12-17 that want to work on soccer goalkeeping skills will have the opportunity to do so at the strictly-goalkeeper soccer camp beginning on June 18. The camp will meet on Sunday's (6/18, 6/25, 7/2, 7/9 & 7/16) from 3 – 4:30 p.m and the cost of the camp is $75.

GCC women's soccer Head Coach Jeff Reyngoudt will run the camp and focus on all aspects of the game with the keepers, including lots of individual attention. Players will be placed according to age (based on numbers), creating a healthy, challenging, learning environment for each player. The sessions are serious and intense, but will never lose sight of the fact that soccer is a game and player's enjoyment is the number one priority. The GCC women's soccer program will host a camp for girls ages 12 – 17 and boys ages 12 – 17 from July 24 - 28. Head Coach Reyngoudt will be joined by other area coaches and college players throughout the five-day camp, which will run each day from 9 – 11:30 a.m. for girls and 12:30 – 3 p.m. for boys. The GCC soccer program believes the "game" is the best teacher and that philosophy will be evident at the camp. Cost of the camp is $125. GCC volleyball and Head Coach Tricia Ziebarth will host a volleyball camp for boys and girls in grades 7-12 on Aug. 7 – 9. The camp will run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. each day and Coach Ziebarth will ensure that each participant learns the proper, fundamental techniques essential for the sport. Participants will learn the skills, drills and thrills of volleyball led by Ziebarth and select assistant coaches. Cost of the camp is $125.
