Drivers beware of couch in the road on Route 19, Bergen

By Billie Owens

Dispatch has received multiple calls about a couch blocking a northbound lane on Route 19 in Bergen, north of Bovee Road.

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: The couch has been removed from the roadway and the state Department of Transportation will be notified to pick it up.

Apparently there are things abundantly in Genesee County that are noteworthy to no one other than myself, prompting tiresome "slow news day" comments. Moments before posting this dumb item, I posted the latest updates about a race car driver's rollover accident requiring Mercy Flight and a four-vehicle accident on Route 77.

I subjectively publish whatever I hear on the scanner that is newsworthy, interesting, amusing or odd to me. And I have this cool place I can post it, so I do.

As for the couch, it was on a rise cresting an overpass and it could have surprised somebody, although not Lisa of course.

I in now way meant to offend you, Billie. I enjoy this site a great deal, and am appreciative of all that you publish.

Had you mentioned the possible hazard, it may not have seemed so dull to me. No need to get mean. It's not becoming.

That was no couch. It was an 18th C Louis XV Canapé, hand-carved walnut covered in silk. Thank you, Billie, for steering traffic around it. Without your words of caution I would be out the 35 Gs American Pickers paid for it.

I'm not mean, I'm just brusque. My dictionary says unbecoming is something "not suitable, especially as not conforming with accepted attitudes or behavior." I'm an old newshound and that adjective and its definition is quite suitable to me.

"As for the couch, it was on a rise cresting an overpass and it could have surprised somebody, although not Lisa of course."

The couch could not have been associated with an overpass in the "northbound lane on Rt. 19 in Bergen, north of Bovee Road" (which intersects Rt. 19 in the hamlet of Stonechurch). There is no overpass- not to the north. Rt. 19 spans the Thruway, but that is south of Bovee Rd. There is, however, an overpass on Bovee Rd.; it spans Rt. 490. Bovee Rd. runs east and west; there is no northbound lane.

It was on the north end of the thruway overpass on route 19. And it was a loveseat. It's funny it was on here, because I saw it when I returned home from Niagara Falls around 3 pm.

Gabor, i put your couch in my truck and then when I got to the bar, It was gone!. Now I know where I lost it, I'm thinking that was when i veered off the road while handin' a beer back to my cousin sitting on the couch. Ummmm

Say has anyone seen my cousin?

Someone told me they saw Dave's cousin Buford sitting on a loveseat that was on the north end of the Thruway overpass on Route 19 in Bergen yesterday afternoon. He looked bored and out of place there. Some official came along and told him to leave. So Buford helped the guy lug the furniture out of the roadway and was last seen walking toward Niagara Falls drinking a beer. Hope this helps.

I don't know about Lance, but no one better mess with "Walking Tall" Pusser. He could tear the arm off that settee and damage people. I know, I saw the movie.

Reminds me of a trip I took several years ago. As I was going over that same bridge there was a young man with his thumb out looking for a ride.
He was carrying a light green type military bag over his shoulders. As he approached the truck and confirmed that I was gonna give him a ride Into the town of Bergen,I seen him toss that mysterious bag In the back of my truck. So,we got moving and Introduced ourselves and I had to ask him what was In the bag.He replied "None of your business".well being as easy going as I am I just blew It off and drove on to the town of Bergen and dropped of my recenly picked up hitchhiker..We exchanged a few "Take It easy and good lucks" to each other and I proceeded on with where I was going.
I had forgotten about the light green military sack till I got home and seen It In the back of my truck.

BTW the couch Is still there as of 6 pm tonight and I never seen that young man again

Billie, he made it home, but now since we ain't got no couch, he's gotta keep sleepin on the kitchen table. I hate it when he passes out and I wanna eat lunch. Word to the wise, if anyone sees him sittin' on a loveseat, don't approach him, if you know what i mean.
