By Billie Owens

Batavia Police are on scene at a reported fight involving five adults and several youths in the roadway at Lewis Place and State Street.

The last time something happened in this area, someone jumped all over me about my comments. This seems to be a frequent happenstance in this area. That's not to say that all the families in this area are bad, or that anyone is, but come on... It racks up frequent flyer miles in the publications. I hope no one is hurt - especially small children that I see playing in this area.

It's been an ongoing neighborhood problem for years, some better, some worse. Right now it seems to be the worst we've seen. And it isn't all the neighbors involved, but the old adage about a few rotten apples seems to be ringing true.

If you've been living under a rock and don't know, Thorpe Street also hogs police attention due to all the street fights and loud disturbances. There may occasionally be an arrest but mostly everyone scurries off and/or they accuse each other of sundry crimes. The police have to listen to their vulgar tirades over and over again, probably about the same stuff involving the same people, while the squad car lights swirl and the F-bombs fly. I feel sorry for the kids who live there.

It is the children that suffer in these places. Time and time again it can be seen and heard how wonderful the people in these neighborhoods treat each other. How can these children be expected to grow up any different when their role models are profane, disrespectful, criminals??
