Hawley calls on Cuomo to increase screening, close borders for Syrian refugees entering New York

By Billie Owens

Press release from Assemblyman Steve Hawley:

In light of last weekend’s horrific terrorist attacks across Europe, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) has called on Gov. Cuomo to increase New York’s screening process for allowing Syrian refugees into the state. Hawley expressed the urgency of this matter as authorities are investigating a Syrian Passport found near one of the French bombing sites after the weekend’s terrorist attacks.

Twenty-five governors across the country have vowed to block Syrian refugees from entering their states as of this morning.

“This is a matter of New York State security,” Hawley said. “I am concerned that Syrian refugees sympathetic to the terrorist attacks could already be living among us, and we have a duty to protect our citizens from future threats. New York’s highly populated cities are easy targets for terrorists who are now more frequently attacking innocent civilians.

"The groundswell of support for this measure is growing by the hour, and 25 governors, including several moderate presidential candidates, already have pledged to close their borders until security is increased. I am officially calling on Gov. Cuomo to close our borders to Syrian refugees until we can properly ascertain threats inside our state and the remaining attackers have been apprehended.”

So when do we just admit that the terrorists were victorious?

"including several moderate presidential candidates" also probably the funniest thing I've read all week.

"The one thing I feel very comfortable saying is there is absolutely no constitutional power for a state to exclude anyone from its territories," said Stephen Legomsky, a Washington University of St. Louis law professor and former chief counsel of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Obama administration. (from http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2015/11/16/governors-have-l…)

A half-hour ago, it was reported that, so far, 31 governors have vowed to block these refugees. Not that it matters.

MARK THESE WORDS: [Cuomo will NOT be one of the governor's vowing to block said refugees.]

His agenda is almost identical with Obama's.

all I see of these people are a threat to my family's safety and more parasites looking for free stuff i.e. free rent, free phone, free food. they can go back to their own country the same way they got here and fight for their own freedom. j/o Cuomo will invite them in and while shaking their hand he'll be using his other to hand them a voter registration form (in Arabic) with a "free stuff" benefits card attached. welcome to New York the SAFE-ACT state.

so how exactly do you close borders to a specific state?.....do you put law enforcement at every road or highway leading into your state? almost sounds impossible to do

Considering that most of the states blocking these refugees have the weakest public assistance programs I'm not entirely sure that's an effective deterrent.

Couple that with I don't think they get handed a list of places and get to pick where they go, nor do they have any really effective means to 'vette' where they're going if they do, on top of the fact that the vast majority of these people are coming directly from bombed out cities with nothing but what they can carry.

Do you really think they're going to quibble over pennies here?

Jeffery, the fact that the states who have the weakest public assistance will be the states to want these refugees, in my opinion.

Just from talking with some of my friends, they've been getting hardcore into this. There was another point brought up. As of Tuesday, there were 31 States whose governors oppose Syrian refugees coming in. On this map it shows who welcomes, not welcomes and who has not committed. Washington, DC is one that hasn't committed.

(Halfway down the page is the map)

We have the highest mosque in the United States at 507. Andrew Cuomo has not committed. California is the next highest and they also have not committed.

Mr. Obama has said he will veto all of the naysayers. I just want to know- When are we going to get rid of this "One Man Show" before our country is taken over???
