Sour Cream Chocolate Cake - Very Easy

By Bea McManis

Every once in a while an occasion comes up when you want to make something just a little different.

I played around with a chocolate cake mix (from Aldi's no less) and ended up with this moist, rich, cake.  At the end of the evening, the piece in the picture was all that was left of the cake.

Pre-heat oven to 350F   Prepare baking pans according to directions on box.  I use cocoa instead of flour in my pans when I make a chocolate cake.

1 box chocolate cake mix

1 pkg. instant chocolate pudding

1 cup brown sugar

Mix dry ingredients

Add:

1 cup sour cream

1 cup oil

1 1/3 cups water

3 eggs (one at a time)

Mix batter, on medium, for 3 minutes.  Pour into prepared pans.  Baking time will vary according to oven.  I did a sheet cake and it took just about 50 minutes.

I frosted with a butter cream frosting, but the last time I made this, I just sprinkled confectioners sugar on it.

Mmmmm, sounds yummy Bea. Thanks for the recipe and the distraction. We all love anything Chocolate!! I must admit though we just had a thick piece of warm, fresh Banana bread with butter. Naughty! Have a Blessed Evening

ooo... I'll have to try that. I wonder if yellow cake mix would yield similar, yet less chocolaty results. I have some in my cupboard.

Thanks for the cocoa powder tip! I always have a tin in the cupboard left over from Christmas baking and never use it.

Kelly, a yellow cake mix can turn into so many different things.
Use the sour cream, and brown sugar, add 1 teasp. pumpkin pie spice and you have a great fall dessert.

Bea, you should get your own cooking show - or page right here on the Batavian! I'm not to practiced at baking - cooking is my thing. 'Tis the season as it gets cooler outside - I'll have to break in my new oven!

Thanks, Sharon.
I'm not a baker either. Baking is a science and I would hate to tell you how I fared in any science class I took.
I much prefer to cook!
But, how can you go wrong with a cake mix?

You cake eaters out there need to know this. My wife makes a sour cream chocolate cake as well, and it is to die for. This is really good stuff. I have no doubt that this online recipe would go over very well indeed. You can have a piece of this cake to test if you want, but I suggest that you just do what I do. Stick your entire face into this great cake and eat yourself into a coma. Later on, when you wake up, take a shower. Please.

Neil,
You have described the best way to dig into this cake.
Yesterday, Lorie brought me two squash from her garden. I had 1/2 of the acorn squash for dinner last night. It was heaven on a plate.
As soon as I get my wits together, I'll share a few squash recipes I rely on each fall.
Lorie, you were going to send me the one you have...still waiting. :)
