TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON MAIN STREET BATAVIA MAKE ME SEE RED

By Robert Clark

Can anyone explain why the traffic lights on Main St., between the hours of 6pm and 6am. are not regulated by a trip light?

With the exception of Oak St. and the light in front of the Post Office at the confluence of Main St. and Ellicott St.,  red lights on Main St. should be activated by traffic coming off the side streets.  There is no reason, for example, that the lights at the intersection of Main and Ross; Main and Vine; and Main and Harvester should change so fast as to not allow cars waiting on the side streets to enter Main St.

For example, you hit the red light at the corner of Harvester and Main with the intention of turning left onto Main St.  That light stays red for at least four minutes.  The light only stays green long enough for one or two cars to make the turn.  If you are the fourth car in line then you wait another four mnutes for the light to change again.

Any answers?

I agree..i liked it years ago after 10 i think all the lights on Main St. flashed..when its 11 pm no traffic on side streets and you have to stop at ever corner seems like a waste of time ..Not to mention all the gas you waste idling waiting for light to change.....

I have no answer but a compliment.

If all you have to bitch about is stoplights.....

Congratulations.

You are a god among men.

All lights except the ones at the major route intersections (Main/Lewiston,Main/Oak,Main/Ellicott,and Main/Clinton) should be flashing yellow from 9pm-6am-99% of time after I turn off a side street, the next light on Main will be red-I think these intersections do have trip grids on the side streets(when they rebuilt main a few years ago)-sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

It's a business thing. If people cutting through Batavia keep getting stuck at almost every intersection because of the traffic lights, they're going to end up looking at the local business, and perhaps stop and buy something.

When Bill Brown had his radio program, that was something he maintained. The lights were programed so people could window shop.
That sword cuts both ways, though. Yes, they can browse the Main street and, perhaps, stopped to shop. Or they can get so disgusted that they just barrel through (slowly) and leave.
We went to Tops yesterday about noon. Traffic was backed up from light to light on Main St. A comment was made that no one, with a half hour lunch, could make it back to work on time in that short window. I can certainly agree with that.
While it may seem like a petty annoyance, the fact is that the light system on Main St. is broken and has been for many years.
I used to joke that Batavia got a two for one deal on traffic lights (and they threw in stop signs as a good will gesture). Our city, being as frugal as they are, decided to use every traffic signal, and every stop sign they had since they brokered such a fantastic deal.

Now if someone can tell me the logic about REMOVING a traffic signal in front of a school, of all places, then
my night would be complete.

I actually addressed this issue right after the Main St. project was done. After approaching Jason he helped me get into an email chat with a DOT director in Albany. I told the director that in most cities I traveled through had set up a timed light system. That means that if you travel the posted speed limit you will always get green lights. In this day and age of trying to be "green", timed traffic lights can drastically reduce fuel use and thus emissions. The director stated that they have studied the traffic patterns and that our lights are set properly. I replied that there is no way he can say that unless he'd never been in Batavia. I also asked for a copy of the supposed report. He said that it was confidential and not to be shared with the public. So I FOIA'd the report and received a letter from Albany saying that no such report existed however, if it did it would not be confidential. I no longer have the letter or email address. So Albany says everything is exactly the way it should be.

The traffic lights in the city are a joke. Way to many on the main drag for an outpost of this size. To go from Leroy to east side of town takes 10 minutes, then it takes 12 to get to the other end of the city. No, not a huge issue in relation to other matters in the world, but relevant. I guess cause it's not a right/left political issue, it has no bearing, right Russ?

While we're on the subject of traffic, I'd like to extend it to area parking lots. The lots at Tops, sporto's, city centre all look like they were designed by drunken idiots!

The way the streets are in this down, it's hard to get anyway in a straight line from the east side of town to the west without taking main street. I know, I've tried (mainly because I hate getting hung up at Oak.

Ok, as long as you are on lights and lots, how about adding Tim Horton Drive thru to the list of complaints! I thought that it was going to be changed so that you didn't have to sit in the road for 5 minutes just to get in there. I go in that way mornings just to try to get to the post office parking. What a joke! The post office should have had it's own entrance!!
