Coffee shop/juice bar on Main and Jackson opens Wednesday

By Howard B. Owens

The new coffee shop/juice bar at the corner of Main and Jackson opens at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Owner Ken Mistler said he will be on hand throughout the day to provide tours of the adjacent gym, which should open in a few weeks.

One of the unique features of the new shop is that a number of the drinks are named after people and businesses downtown. For example, you can stop in and order The Batavian, which is a strawberry smoothie with banana chucks mixed in and dark chocolate shavings on top.

Congratulations Ken!! You certainly have given Main St. Batavia a much needed facelift. I am hopeful that your improvements to the store fronts will stimulate local business, and also bring back the local charm that is Batavia. I must say though I was a little suprised to see a Coffee Culture based out of Canada, starting up next to Batavia Tailors. Gees, like we need another franchise coffee, and pastry shop. I dont know how the ones that run the city justify it. I would have thought they would have given you a fighting chance at local business success. Kind of a slap in the face, dont you think? Who knows what they were thinking. Anyway Ken I wish you much Deserved Success!! Call Me

John, people get confused because of the tax breaks the county EDC gives to attract business.

The Council and City Manager are not in the business of telling businesses if they can open and where. I know that cities can play games with zoning or can make it hard. For example, big box stores from moving in but, I feel there is something inherently wrong about government getting involved like that.

I drove past this place today. I didn't realize what they were going to be selling. That's really a neat idea! I like the Polka Dot idea. I might have to go there just to try the Batavian!

Thanks to all.... Hope to have a cup of coffee with each of you. Karen thanks for the extra support. I understand what you mean, possible a couple of months with out the extra pressure of a little competition would have been nice, but hey it took me and three guys 14 months to complete. Maybe if I had hired a few more locals, I would have opened by now. Karen as for the city being able to pick and choose who can open and who cannot... Thank goodness they cannot. After all these where the same people who built the "City Center" just kidding...... Thanks again..... KEN

Good luck Ken! Hopefully people will realize who it is keeping our downtown alive and stop in to buy a coffee or two. I did this morning but Rob wouldn't let me in.

The gym is still a few weeks away from opening -- but it's looking great inside. It's going to be a great facility. I plan on joining -- not that I have any time for such things.
