Photo: Cherry Blossoms behind Upton Monument

By Howard B. Owens

The cherry blossoms (or I assume they are cherry blossoms) are in bloom behind the Upton Monument outside the Old Court House at Main and Ellicott streets.

BTW: We still might get thundershowers today and tonight, and there's still a chance of snow on Friday night.

Gabor, I think I fell in love with Western New York my first spring here -- 2006. I was living in an apartment at Holiday Harbor in Canandaigua. One day it was cold, overcast, icy; the next day, trees were budding and birds were singing and the sun was out. Growing up in Southern California, I'd come across people all the time who said, "I miss the four seasons." My unspoken assumption always was, "Oh, you miss fall."

No, there really are four seasons outside of Southern California. The emergence of spring is a real treat. I never really knew spring in California, at least not like anything here.

Howard, I can only complain about 1 out of four seasons here in WNY. And the "W" season I love too till the end of December. The real secret of this area is you have to go crazy and enjoy the area in spring, summer, and fall. I wont post it but its like "wild horses" song should be playing in the background. I am just torn between the version of the song, Susan Boyle or The Rolling Stones !

Beautiful picture, Howard! Wow...

Not sure if they're cherry blossoms or crab apple? They seem more pink (which if I remember correctly), cherry blossoms tend to be more white. Don't quote me! LOL Nonetheless ~ gorgeous either way. Yes, Spring is a wonderful time of year. Love the 4 seasons in NY.

My favorite now. I stand corrected sir ! I believe that the pictured blooms are called wild cherries which are actually crap apples or ornamental crab apple blossoms.

I like all the blooms of spring also.....BUT I hope that we don't get a super cold snap that would knock out the lilac buds-those are my favorites.

Wow! Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Now that takes me back. I was also fond of the Burrito Bros.' version of "Six Days on the Road." Here's a link- not to the Burritos, but a Parsons tribute that includes some history and photos.

If you don't hear from me for a few days, I'm pulling out some old vinyl and cranking up the Fisher turntable.
