Photos: A morning tour

By Howard B. Owens

I was out on a story that didn't pan out this morning, but being out and about a little earlier than usual, I was struck how great the sky looked to the east, so I decided to drive out that way in search of photo opportunities. The better light was probably 30 or 45 minutes earlier before I got to any place worth taking pictures, but here are three photos from my short drive.

Above a group of barns on Britt Road near Warner Road.

I was struck by these two bare trees in an emerging cornfield.

Douglas Lake on Route 237.

No, "Call's Pond" is on East Morganville Road. Secondly, the body of water in that picture is not a "lake". It's a pond at best and come summer it will barely be a puddle.

They call it "Douglas Lake." There's a sign there, so I'm not going to argue with the property owner about what they call their own property -- a lake or a pond.

Howard, being a transplanted Californian, you have an eye and appreciation of the natural beauty of WNY. Some times us natives are jaded to the wonders of Mother Nature and need to view it through your view point and camera lens to appreciate what we have here.

There's also falls off Mill Road in Linden. Also, private property.

This stretch of Mill Road is also one of my favorite spots in the county.

What is the criteria for a "falls" ? There are other places where water "falls" : Little Falls Rd, behind the new City Hall/Court bldg, and on the corner of N.Pembroke and Beckwith Rd where the mill used to be across from the Magador. Just wondering if there are certain criteria for naming something as a "falls" ?

IT IS Douglas Lake - Edith Douglas and her husband Bob own the property and it is their little retreat - they own Douglas Farm Market at 237/33 and sell ice cream cones in their homemade waffle cone. Very nice people....

It was just a guess. The site that Jerry put up shows both, man made (Holley, for example, which is a beautiful falls) and natural.
But the site I posted mentions only three and all three are natural falls.
