Thruway cams display current conditions

By Howard B. Owens

You can view current conditions on the Thruway from three webcams positioned along the route in the county here.

Doug Yeomans

I like being able to access the cams but the lenses are covered in snow making them useless. They need a wiper to periodically clear the view.

Well, Doug, I just arrived in LeRoy from South Greece. It took me twice as long as usual and that was absolutely the worst 490 driving I've ever seen. This come from a seasoned 22 year NYS driver. I drove all the way from Gates in 4wheel drive and anywhere from 1st-3rd gear (out of 6) in jeep wrangler. I kept losing sight of the cars in front of me. The tractor trailers were going even slower, but since they couldn't see their lanes they were difficult to pass. I've never seen 490 like that and can't believe it was even open.

So, everyone, please be careful if you are going to or coming from that way. :)

My wife grew up in a different climate Bud, she's never had to drive in anything like this so she doesn't have the confidence it takes to successfully navigate in a white-out.

Of course she's stubborn as hell so she told me exactly where I could stick my hotel idea.

I bet if I went into the archives, I could find this same exact conversation involving the same three people (or at least two of them) from last winter.

You are probably right Howard.
Chris, hope the family gets home safe and sound.

It's like Howard said, same thing, different year. I'm glad it came this close to Christmas. :)

There is something wonderful about the first real snowfall. There is nowhere I would rather be than right here, right now! Those in the south can enjoy their weather, they don't understand that many of us don't envy them.
Great pictures, too.

Richard, I commuted to Buffalo every day (then twice a week, drove from Buffalo to Rochester, after work, to attend school). Later, I commuted from Batavia to Kodak Office, in Rochester. No, I don't do it now, but I did for a long, long time.

I hope that the pattern continues into Christmas. My son and daughter-in-law will be coming home for a few days for Christmas. My daughter-in-law has never seen snow and she has put in that one request. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
