'Fajita flare up' sets off fire alarm at Margarita's

By Howard B. Owens

Apparently a fajita skillet at Margarita's got a little hot and set off the fire alarm.

City fire units were dispatched, but a first responder sounded the "all clear" pretty quickly.

"Dispatch, you can disregard," was the first responder's message. "They had a fajita flare up."

Dispatch: "Copy. Fajita flare up."

If you don't eat much Mexican food and are unfamiliar with "fajita," this from Wikipedia:

In many restaurants, the fajita meat is brought to the table sizzling loudly on a metal platter or skillet, with the tortillas and condiments served on the side.

Additionally, some restaurants keep a flame burning under the skillet.

True fajita is beef skirt steak, but most restaurants also serve chicken and shrimp fajitas.

How is Margarita's? I haven't found a decent Mexican place since I was in Maryland. I'm not looking for Tex Mex, like Chili's, I am looking for true sit down Mexican.

Margarita's is the best Mexican I've found in WNY so far. There's a place in Canandaigua I really like that isn't quite traditional Mexican, El Rincon, very good. And we've been to a more traditional place that just opened in Farmington (forget the name), and then there is El Pacifico in Farmington/Canandaigua area, which is OK. For traditional Tijuana-style Mexican food, Margarita's is very good.

Search the site for "Margarita's "and you'll find a couple of posts Philip and I did when we were first starting The Batavian.

Margarita's is our favorite for Mexican. The Chimichangas are top rate and the refried beans are excellent. I do have to say that the portions shrank after the move from Main St. to Jackson. When they were on Main, it was almost impossible to finish a dinner.

I highly recommend Margaritas Restaurant. Our family has frequented the establishment since they first opened on what is now the CVS property @ the corner of S. Lyon. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, go to Margaritas. This isn't the first time the alarm has gone off, by the way. We have been in there on a busy night before and the fajita smoke was starting to get a bit too much. Before we knew it, the alarm went off and there were red flashing lights outside. That place is smokin'! In a good way. ;)
