Photo: Counting Cars

By Howard B. Owens

Joseph Neth and Marcy Crandall are Town of Batavia employees. Their assignment today: Sit for two hours at the corner of Main and Ellicott streets and count cars. Neth said it's his understanding that the state is thinking of reducing the lanes of traffic through the intersection and the car counts are part of the study for that proposal.

Steve Ognibene

let's hope they put some low numbers in so nothing changes. we don't need our state reducing traffic at this intersection unless they want it backed up for eternity.

Funny stuff ... but I can think of a plausible explanation ... check each other's work. The state probably averages the two counts, and there are probably multiple counts over random periods. At least if the State cares about being statistically accurate (not an assumption I would make).

Why do they keep making traffic WORSE? Changing to two lanes on Oak Street certainly didn't make it easier for those of us that live on the side streets to get out.

I was sure to give them the "we're # 1 " hand gesture after waiting several minutes to get off ellicott st onto main st at the light !

(Bea, I really didn't but what gives with that light)?

That's Great! I'm just tickled pink to know that there is nothing else to worry about in this State other than reducing lanes at an intersection. I just might drive to Albany and sit outside of a building at Washington Avenue and State Street and count how many people go in that are
over paid and under qualified (POLITICIANS)

One question-why are town employees doing it and not city employees? One thing I wish the state would change though-that stupid light at the Thruway entrance-I go through early in the morning(between 5-6am)-that light is red when I go by Richmond Ave.,it's still red by time I reach it,and there are times when I wait at least 3 minutes more waiting for it to turn green.Maybe the state is considering putting a narrow roundabout at Main and Ellicott......

When I left the old courthouse at 6 p.m., they were back on location. And when I drove past Ellicott and Court, there was a guy in a state DOT vehicle in the St. Mary's parking lot, and then I drove past the Pok-A-Dot and there were two guys on the riff-raff bench with clipboards.

The plan is to remove a lane in each direction this summer on Ellicott. It will be a 2 lane road with a turning lane and parking on both sides. That will run from Main to Cedar St. I think it is just plain dumb.

I live on Ellicott and received a notice from the State about it last fall. There was an informational meeting back in the fall as well. I am just glad I didn't plant any of our bulbs out between the curb and side walk seeing as I live on Ellicott.

From downtownbataviany.com
"NYS Department of Transportation is preparing plans to repair and resurface 1.7 miles of Ellicott Street (this includes a major section of the BID) in Batavia, New York.

Scope of work: asphalt pavement repairs, pavement milling 2.5 inch depth, 2 inch asphalt overlay, new pavement markings and cleaning of drainage structures. The pavement markings are planned to change the traffic pattern from 4 lanes to 3 lanes, with parking on both sides of the road.

Lane Closures: Ellicott Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction during pavement repair and reconstruction. Day and night time lane closures are planned for the project. Access to businesses will be given the highest priority.

If you have questions please contact Dan Farrelly (NYSDOT) at 585-272-4875 or the BID Office at 585-344-0900. "

Way to go NYSDOT. Another Pork project. Well at least the Riff Raff Bench is being utilized. What a good investment- NOT. I cant wait to see the Gridlock on Main St., People trying to get lunch and get back to work, Friday rush hour, the police, trying to get out of the station parking lot. Ya know, Oak St was a single lane for years, then it was changed to 2 lanes, few years later, back to a single lane again. What are these state officials thinking. Maybe they could spare some blacktop for our city streets. Oh thats right thats the city's job...Batavia city streets have NEVER been in such disrepair. They are the worst I've ever seen them, in all the years Ive been driving them.. Oy-Vay

They do have traffic counters. Those boxes with the black cords that go across the road count cars and average speed. I wonder if it is less expensive to pay people to count cars? Seems like it would be less accurate than the boxes.

I'm a little confused, is the lane closure permanent or just during resurfacing. Really what Batavia needs is something to make traffic even more unbearable. There are days I'd rather go to Henrietta. Seriously, that's ridiculous.
