Today's Poll: Do you think top school administrators are appropriately paid?

By Howard B. Owens

Howard, by "appropriately paid" do you mean that they make the right amount of money, are paid too much money, or not paid enough money? Someone might think they're paid too much and so disagree with the statement, another might believe that they're not paid enough and so also disagree, for an entirely different reason.

Take a look at the article posted yesterday about top salaries in Genesee County. The superintendents at Pavilion and Pembroke (both small schools) earning over 200K would be examples of being grossly overpaid.

I was also happy to see the commentary going back and forth. Check it out.

I would also like to hear some comments from the other side of the fence. Why or how can you justify an individual earning this kind of money from small schools and modest community tax base? Doesn't make sense.

I guess I need to go back to college to become a superintendent :)

Good question... This should be dependent on individual responsibilities, district size, community tax base, experience and so forth. In this area anything over $150,000 is a slap in the face to the tax payers. Look at districts like Lancaster, Amherst, Orchard Park, Depew, all much larger districts with many more tax-paying families. These superintendents, all earning well under $200k.

I'll throw this out.

A Superintendent would be equilvilent to a CEO right? I know that it's not the same thing, but I work in the private sector and that's how my mind works.

The Batavia Super makes about a 125k or so, has around 500 employees and an annual budget of just under $40 million. I think that is fair.

Now about the Supers making 200k + ? That seems a little high, but that's just me.

Mary, there are a lot of people "who ride off the tax payer dollar" that might disagree with you on that comment. Might have been better if you singled out a specific person or group of persons.

Thank you Timothy. Reading Williams comments makes me think that maybe teachers are way underpaid. Grammer, spelling and proper writing skills(capitalizing, punctuation)is out the window.

Greg, reading your comments makes me think you're right. Sorry, but it is just a pet peeve of mine. If you are going to slam someone for their poor literary skills, at least make sure that yours are impeccable.

I'm sure you meant to say:

Reading "William's" comments makes me think that maybe teachers are way underpaid. "Grammar", spelling and proper writing skills ("capitalization", punctuation) "are" out the window.
