Le Roy woman accused of growing marijuana

By Howard B. Owens

An investigation by the Local Drug Enforcement Task Force into alleged marijuana cultivation in Le Roy has led to the arrest of a woman following a raid of a home on East Main Street near North Street.

Officers from multiple agencies participated in the raid and as a precaution, administrators of Wolcott School were asked to have students shelter in place.

Taken into custody and issued an appearance ticket was Sara Schimley, 23, of East Main Street, Le Roy

Schimley is charged with unlawful growing of cannabis, a Class A misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be pending.

Participating in execution of the search warrant were uniformed officers from Le Roy, the Sheriff's Office and State Police.

The search allegedly uncovered a quantity of marijuana and equipment used to grow marijuana.

Wow, how many acres was this cultivation? Did you use a helicopter? bring in a swat team? hostage negotiation? how many weapons? was there a dead body? did anyone fire at police officers? what about the FBI? homeland security? did you evacuate the block? how was the news conference? and of course, now that you traumatized the children, are they receiving counseling? My thoughts and prayers to the victims.

Who knows what other horrible crimes are being missed in LeRoy, the crime capital of Genesee County. Maybe another criminal left McDonalds and didn't turn on their turn signal?? You never know. But this stuff is not only insignificant, but why is it newsworthy? Marijuana will be legalized in New York. Any State that legalized same sex marriage, tries to get gun owners to sign a registry, and is run by downstate Democratic Liberals, will surely legalize Marijuana. And on the way, find a way to tax it. I agree with the other comments.

Just a little clarification.+

Just a little clarification. I do NOT think it is Ok for this individual to grow cannibus. I think in certain limited medical situations, marijuana is needed. But it should be properly regulated, like booze. But simply destroying these plants, along with a ticket and fine would be appropriate.(Probably what is going to happen anyways). But to stick our "Heads in the Sand" and think our friends in Albany will not get Marijuana legalized, and taxed, is also nieve. "Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it."

Fred, we published the story because people in Le Roy wondered what was going on across from the school and why a stay-put order was in place at Wolcott School.

Personally, I have no problem with anyone, as long as they are adults, either growing or smoking 'pot'. That being said, I do believe that if you knowingly break the law, and get 'caught', then "suck it up" and suffer the consequences.
Marijuana laws may seem unfair. Heck, I believe them to BE unfair. But, until they are changed, they are still the law. Now, one can simply choose to ignore any law they want, but, don't whine that it's unfair. Either work towards changing it legally, or, 'suck it up' when you're caught breaking it.

as i stated in the other post, a SATURDAY bust would have protected these children ,but as billie said, don't second guess the police they know what they are doing..... lol... who gets the promotion for this job?.....oh, and i will always second guess the police, somebody has to....

Feel free to second guess the police, but shouldn't you make sure you have all the facts before you do? In this case, you don't. That's all Billie is saying. You're passing judgments without haven enough information to make those judgements.

You know I watch this argument pop up all the time. I often hear references to prohibition in regards to this argument. While I agree that is sensible argument for it's legalization from people that arent addicted partakers. You have to realize that the comparison between prohibition and todays legalize pot movement arent even close. When I see cops paid off for turning their heads while partaking and people growing it in mass quantites to sell to a huge international black market, pipelines of product going in both directions at our northern and southern borders, and large scale federal mobilization of enforcement. Then it just isnt the same. You dont have nearly enough people willing to openly defy the govt like there was on alcohol prohibition.

Until the voting public finds it's true voice to make Govt legislate and regulate and such to our wishes instead of their own, this is what we are stuck with.

Howard, I just finished reading the article about Mayor Bloomberg, which you pointed us to. If I didn't think this man was so dangerous to (Americans rights), it would almost be laughable. 'Blubbering Idiot' comes to mind, at first thought, but he's not stupid. Maybe 'idiot savant' would be a more correct title. Couple that with mega-money and his seeming need to laud over others (power-hungry), and I believe that makes him dangerous. I have read many articles about his stop-and-frisk policies, and it appears he just doesn't care about peoples 'rights'. And the utter STUPIDITY that comes out of his mouth (and brain) just makes one wonder about him. Can't legally sell 24oz-size soft-drinks but nothing stopping you from selling two 10oz ones? On third-thought, maybe 'Blubbering Idiot' IS the more correct description.

Out of curiosity exactly when on Saturday would you suggest doing this if you are running it? Perhaps in the morning as Little League is going on right behind it as kids walk right by the house to get to the field? Or maybe a little later in the day while families are outside enjoying their backyards, going for walks enjoying their neighborhoods? Maybe a shelter in place order could have gone into effect for the whole neighborhood on Saturday? Why not just phone the people you are serving the warrant on to let them know you are coming?

Personally, I think it was well thought out and am glad they chose to do it during school hours because that way there was the most control. It was quick. The kids were safe.

Perhaps the lesson should be don't grow pot until it's legal?

well Jennifer i'm glad you asked...I would have had the children looking out the windows to witness what happens when you mess with marijuana in Leroy. .the hammer will be brought down...multiple police agencies will invade your homestead to issue you a misdemeanor ticket......now there is a lesson to learn....
if I was one of those cops, i'd be embarrassed..... no photo ops?

See Mr. Spaulding, the REAL lesson there is contained in your very own words... "If you were one of those cops you'd be embarassed." Well you may be right, but besides the embarassment you'd still be raiding the house issuing the misdemeanor ticket, collecting a paycheck and still working as a cop now wouldnt you.

Its easy to sit outside of a system and criticize those working in it. But a different story altogether if you are in the middle of it huh?

excuse me kyle, did I say something wrong? this whole story is about OVERKILL. at least 3 different police agencies, busting a little old lady for misdemeanor marijuana possession... I don't like it, and apparently you do...nothing wrong with dis-agreement unless you dis-agree with a drone operator.... have a good day kyle and keep up with your support of law enforcement.....I hope they never come looking for you...

It is the job of police to enforce the law. We are a nation of laws, not men. It's not up to police officers to interpret the law according to their own whim or personal preferences.

I think marijuana should be legal, but it's not. If you don't like the law, get it changed, but to take it out on the police officers charged with enforcing the law is rather foolish.

Also, where do you get "little old lady"? Twenty-three is old to you?

Who are you though Mr. Spaulding? I dont worry about police because I don't do anything that would require me to be in fear of them. It's simple enough. You however seem to consider yourself some sort of expert? What qualifications do you have to second guess the police? Three different agencies? Yeah probably one from each.... I dont like or dislike what they did but you seem to have already made assumptions about that. Just like you assume that letting the children see the drug bust is gonna make some sort of impression on them. Like they havent seen that 100 times worse on tv or in the movies. Also as Howard pointed out 23 is an old lady? Seems you exaggerate facts frequently to make your arguments.

kyle kyle kyle........."probably one from each agency" seems you exaggerate facts too......

Nice dodge of the observation David but considering your mental age why should it matter, (after all 23 is a little old lady to you) It still doesnt equal an exaggeration of facts like yours, or support the second guessing of police does it.
