Today's Poll: Have you watched 'Breaking Bad'?

By Howard B. Owens
Ed Hartgrove

One of the best series I've seen in years.
Watched it on Netflix.
Had to wait for them (Netflix) to finally run the last season, but they finally did.
So, I watched all 8 episodes of the last season.

(SPOILER ALERT)
Loved it when the brother-in-law finally realized he'd been had.
Then, it was over.

I thought, "Well, OK, I can see it ending like that".
I felt a LITTLE bit disappointed, but not too much.

Two months later, I'm tooling around cable, and I came across Episode 11 of the last season - WHAT THE ___?
Come to find out, Netflix didn't wait for the complete final season before airing it - they put a half-season on.

Probably a good thing a Netflix representative wasn't around that day.

I think 'Breaking Bad' is certainly one of the greatest TV series ever. It's not just engrossing entertainment, but I think it's an absolutely amazing essay on the nature of evil, and how evil can metastasize beyond the scope of its immediate perpetrators. (e.g. the sequence of story-line events ending in the horrific 'ABQ' episode.)

My favorite character: Gus.

While I can watch reruns of 'The Sopranos' ad infinitum, I have little or no desire to revisit 'Breaking Bad' all the way through again -- I can't explain why.

We watched the entire series on Netflix after it was already a huge hit. It was riveting. The character arc of the science teacher-turned-meth mogul was astounding. The characters were all interesting; casting was flawless. None other than Sir Anthony Hopkins wrote a fan letter via e-mail to Bryan Cranston, the actor who played the main character.

It says:

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email -- so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber - I take it we are both represented by UTA. Great agency.

I've just finished a marathon of watching "BREAKING BAD" -- from episode one of the First Season -- to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen -- ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening [expletive] in this business, and I've sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular -- absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers.... every department - casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to -- would you pass on my admiration to everyone - Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada -- everyone -- everyone gave master classes of performance ... The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I've ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It's almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.

I can't choose just one favorite character. Can't do it. There's Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, of course, but also Gus and the loco, erratic, foul-mouthed, Tuco Salamanca. I also thought Jesse's video-game playing friends -- Badger and Skinny Pete -- created some amusing comic relief.

I’ve gotten to the point in my life that I dislike most television programs offered now and seldom watch TV.

I caught the first few episodes when my laptop crashed. I’m hooked.

AMC released the final season in two parts. Eight episodes, and then months later, the final eight episodes.

I think that's how the producers wanted it.

Netflix is obligated to release TV episodes according to licensing agreements and Netflix released episodes months after they aired on AMC.
