Today's Poll: Should police be able to temporarily take guns from person who threatens suicide?
Yes, but only if there is a court review within say, 72 hours.
Can't vote YES nor upvote John's comment enough.
Yes and with a 72 hour hold on the person.
Certainly YES. If someone is a danger to themselves or others then they should not have access to weapons.
I would say yes, but only if there is a hearing within 72 hours or less, and only if the person in question is given the option to surrender them to an FFL Dealer, instead of the Police, so they can be sold contingent on the outcome of the said hearing.
No. Not a decision to be made by a police officer. The police do lie you know, read today's buffalo news, page A2 "testilying".... Any kind of property forfeiture should be handled through the court. The police are people just like you and me, they can lie they can cheat they can steal, they can do everything a non-cop does. A cop can report anything he wants, piss them off enough, and the report can be fabricated. To give a broad body of people the authority to take someone's property without due process is wrong. When a person threatens to suicide, they get hauled away and evaluated. Again NO.
david, its not about protecting property, it is about protecting lives. There are some things worth a lot more than a gun, a car, or a house. Procedures can be written for such events. I'm certain people will agree that it is worth it over the headache.
brian I don't know what you're talking about.........
I thought they already could and have been able to. We're living in the new world now, my President said so. To hell with due process.
Now that it is society's job to protect people from themselves... they should take anyone who threatens suicide and lock them in an empty room. So they can't take an overdose, slit their wrist, jump off a bridge or in front of a train.
