The Genesee County Planning Department in conjunction with the Form-Based Codes Institute will present a training series from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, at County Building #2, 3837 W. Main St. Road, Batavia.

  • What are Form-Based Codes? (6:30 – 7 p.m.)

Genesee County Senior Planner Derik Kane will present a brief introduction to the topic. This slideshow explains how form-based codes help communities achieve development goals.

  • Pre-recorded Webinar: Form-Based Codes for Small Towns (7 – 8 p.m.)

Stefan Pellegrini, principal and vice president of Opticos Design, Inc., shows ways to use form-based codes to address preservation, evolution, and growth in small towns and rural communities. He discusses redevelopment, extension of infrastructure, and related strategies for self-sustaining rural communities, strong downtowns and responsible growth patterns. Stefan provides examples from towns as small as 5,000 people, with applications to even smaller towns and unincorporated communities.

  • Pre-recorded Webinar: Form-Based Codes for Small Towns: The Traditional Town Center (8 – 9 p.m.)

George Proakis, director of Planning, City of Somerville, Mass., continues the conversation about smaller towns and villages, focusing on strategies for the traditional town center. He draws upon his own work using form-based codes to conserve the historic character of New England communities while revitalizing them and spurring new development. George shows the unique power of FBCs to accomplish these two objectives.
