Selected as the 1951 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, "Guys and Dolls" is this year's presentation of the Alexander High School Drama Club.
The musical is full of the hustle and bustle of New York City, featuring gangsters, gamblers, and other characters of the Big Apple underworld.
Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Their work is based on two short stories written in the 1920s and '30s by the quintessential American reporter Damon Runyon. Runyon was known for the unique dialect he employed in his stories, mixing highly formal language and slang.
Because of book co-author Burrows' troubles with the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951, the trustees of Columbia University, which awards Pulitizers, vetoed the selection of "Guys and Dolls" and no Pulitzer for Drama was actually awarded that year.
In 1955, a film adaptation of the play was released starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.
Alexander HS shows will be held in the school auditorium:

Doors open a half hour before each show.
