Closings and cancellations for today

By Howard B. Owens

Closings and cancellations for Thursday, Dec. 15:

  • Message from Mark Alexander, superintendent of Oakfield-Alabama Central School District: "Due to our current and anticipated weather conditions school will be closing today. Elementary students will not be picked up and middle/high students will be bused home as soon as possible. I apologize for the late notice, but the conditions are not expected to improve."

I think Byron-Bergen must be closed too, I haven't seen a bus go by here yet. It may have gone by though, visibility is pretty low up here near the Orleans county line.

I walked to school from Ross Street, first to good old John Kennedy with the halls of gold and blue, and I still remember the school song. Next to the Junior High School and then, the High School. I rarely remember school being closed in bad weather. There was a joke going around that the Superintendent of School's dog was the deciding factor.
On cold winter mornings, he sent his dog outside to do his business. If the dog came back in a minute or less, then school was canceled. We celebrated the closing by walking over to the State Street Hill with our sleds to take our chances with the killer tree at the bottom.

If memory serves, I believe -25F is the general guideline used for schools in the area closing due to considerations of students walking in the extreme cold.

Rich Richmond. Back in the 60's, in Pavilion, we also said our school closings were determined by our Superintendent. Mr. Graham drove a VW, and we said that school was only closed if he couldn't make it up the east hill (he lived right downtown, Pavilion).
